The National Weather Service will conduct two statewide severe weather drills the morning (at 10:15 a.m.) and evening (7:30 p.m.) of Thursday, March 19 in the Culver area.

The drill will be initiated by a test tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service offices in Indiana, triggering programmed electronic devices.

Residents should be aware, as spring time approaches, of severe weather-related terminology.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop and people should take precautions to protect themselves and their property, and listen to the radio or television to stay informed.

A tornado warning means that a tornado has actually been sighted and people should seek shelter immediately, such as a basement or, if there is no basement, a small room in the middle of the house (a closet or bathroom) is best. If in a car or mobile home, seek sturdier shelter immediately (most tornado deaths occur in one or the other). Avoid outside walls and windows.
