Northern State tourney begins
The first round of the Northern State Conference Tennis Tournament went in the books Thursday night at DeSantis Courts in Bremen.
Round robin winner Knox advanced at 3 singles and on both doubles courts in its only three matches in Bremen, while 5-1 Triton won two of three singles matches. Host Bremen won matches at 1 and 2 singles and 1 doubles, meanwhile.
The next round of the NSCs will proceed Saturday at 10 a.m.

Knox beats Culver in NSC match
Knox’s volleyball team topped Culver Community in three games in a Northern State Conference volleyball match Thursday, 25-18, 25-22, 25-21.
Torie Elliott finished with 13 kills and six digs, and Kylie Bridegroom served up four aces with six digs for the Lady Redskins.
Cara Hasnerl set 34 assists, Kara Howard tallied four aces, and Rachel Lenig finished with five blocks in the win for Knox, which pushes the team out to 4-1 in NSC play.
Culver was led by Samantha Howard’s nine kills and Tosha Harris’ eight. Marisa Howard finished with eight assists, Megan Thompson and Bayli Fearnow both registered nine digs, and Donna Zehner stuffed four solo blocks in the loss for the Cavs.

Lady Pilgrims fall at Memorial
Plymouth’s volleyball team lost a three-set Northern Lakes Conference match on the road at Elkhart Memorial Tuesday, 25-22, 25-14, 25-15.
Emily Eveland finished with an all-around four kills, 15 digs and three blocks, while Cassi Quissell killed four points, and Haley Harrell set 15 assists with 14 digs.
Libbie Portteus and Hunter Stevens each logged three kills, Ellen Smith dug up 13 balls, and Lacy Poczik netted three blocks.

Mullaney leads Argos past Culver
Sean Mullaney netted four goals with an assist, and Argos shut out visiting Culver Community 8-0 at Eugene Snyder Field Thursday evening.
Dominic Cataldo scored twice for the Dragons, who outshot their opponents 11-3.
Casey Johnson and Tyler Peters combined in goal for the shutout as Argos moved to 11-2.
Marshall Anderson recorded three saves in vain for the Cavaliers.

Bremen bounces back
Bremen bounced back from its first loss of the year with a 4-0 defeat of Lakeland Christian on the road in Warsaw Thursday.
Danny Reynoso scored in the 37th and 63rd minutes, Sam Lacher finished with a goal and a shared assist, and Clayton Phillips also scored in the win, which pushes the Lions out to a mark of 13-1.
C.J. Thornton made five saves in goal, and Austin Adams had three in the shutout.

CMA surges to 6-2 win
Up by a tentative 3-2 margin at the half, Culver Military’s boys soccer team netted three goals while pitching a second-half shutout in a 6-2 win over visiting Elkhart Christian Thursday at the Academies.
Nick Bissonnette finished with two goals and three assists, and Dominic Puzevic recorded a pair of goals for Culver. Perley Provost tallied five saves in goal for the victors.

LaVille stops Glenn
LaVille’s girls soccer team saw five different players score, and Kyleigh Breden and Karissa Foster combined for the shutout in goal as the Lady Lancers beat Northern State Conference foe John Glenn 6-0 at home in Newton Park Thursday.
Grace Ingle scored twice with an assist, Sarah Niespodziany scored with an assist, and Nina Zeiger, Heather Roeder and Kailey Gardner also scored for LaVille, which leveled a prolific 22 shots on goal to Glenn’s one.

Culver wins on the road
Culver Community earned a 3-0 win on the road at Westville Thursday.
Kayla Shaffer scored just 47 seconds in, scored again on a Denisha Brown assist in the fifth minute, then assisted on the game’s final goal by Courtney Littleton as neither team struck again after the 15th minute.
