A gas leak was reported late this morning at the Colonial Court mobile home park located on 16th Road in Argos. The Argos Fire Department (AFD) and Argos Police Department (APD) found natural gas blowing from a line at the mobile home park and immediately began evacuating nearby residents.
"We have taken the necessary precautions to ensure everyone's safety and evacuated most of Colonial Court," stated AFD lieutenant Mark Thompson. It was not necessary to evacuate the entire park due to wind direction and speed which kept the gas from spreading to any of the residences located to the east.
At press time, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) was on scene evaluating the damage. NIPSCO public relations representative Eddie Melton stated, "NIPSCO received a call regarding a third party hit to a gas steel riser late this morning. Gas was blowing fairly heavily from it and out of precaution, the Argos Fire Department decided to evacuate the area. No customers have lost service at this point."
Thompson reported that the Red Cross had been contacted to help with those who are displaced until this afternoon. An area has been set up at the Methodist Church for those who are in need of somewhere to go while repairs are being made. Red Cross staff has also been notified that there are several pets who will also be in need of water and care.
"The time line we've been given is approximately three to four hours," stated Thompson regarding the length of time the area will be closed off.
