State of Indiana versus James L. Campbell, charged with Arson, a Class A Felony, following a fire in March 2014 at Starke County Salvage and Campbell Tire, on U.S. 35, south of Toto Road, Knox, which caused injury to a Bass Lake firefighter.
The jury trial started March 16, with jury selection. At the end of the day a jury of five women and seven men, plus two alternate jurors had been selected.
Tuesday started with opening comments, with Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Mary Ryan and Campbell’s co-counsels, Jennifer Lukemeyer and James Voyles Jr., of Indianapolis. The remainder of last week included witnesses for the prosecution detailing the chain of events chronologically, starting with Campbell’s employees telling of events just prior to the fire, Bass Lake firefighters who were first on the scene and present when a firefighter was injured, winding up Friday with the results of the investigations by the State Fire Marshal and insurance company.
The prosecution is expected to present their final witnesses today, with defense witnesses scheduled to testify Tuesday. The trial is expected to go to the jury Wednesday, following closing comments by the prosecution and defense.
