Alco store in Knox closing forever

Alco Store in the Knox Mall will soon be closing its doors forever.
A U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dallas Texas approved an order this week that authorizes three liquidators to oversee the “going out of business” sales for each of Alcos 198 stores: Great American Group LLC, Tiger Capital Group LLC and SB Capital Group LLC will arrange for the sale of more than 260 million dollars of inventory, beginning Friday, Nov. 21.
In October, Alco Stores filed Chapter 11 protection in the Northern District of Texas federal bankruptcy court.
Locally, sales will start at five to 30 percent off.

Christmas bazaar Saturday

KNOX — The annual Christmas Bazaar will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Knox Moose Family Center 115 N. Main St, Knox.
Santa will visit with area children from from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the Knox High School and Middle School Kids will be caroling; breakfast and Lunch will be served too. There will be gift wrapping, a bake sale, homemade candies, crafts, crochet, stamping, wood crafts, Avon, jewelry, DyI, Thirty one, and much more.

INDOT readies for winter weather

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation has spent the warmer months preparing for winter weather, including that forecasted this past weekend. Now it’s time to do your part ahead of Winter Weather Preparedness Week this Nov. 16 through 22.
“INDOT urges drivers to dust off their winter driving habits before snow or ice leads to a crash or slide off,” said INDOT Commissioner Karl Browning. “This means planning extra travel time and allowing a safe distance between cars, especially our plow trucks. Remember, if the roads are blocked, plows cannot get through.”

INDOT worker assaulted in construction zone

BOURBON – The Indiana State Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who assaulted an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) worker Friday, Nov. 7 around 11:15 a.m. The assault happened in the southbound lane of S.R. 331, just south of Bourbon in a construction zone.

Musial, Norem named finalists for NWI Influential Women Awards

STARKE COUNTY – Carla Musial and Kathy Norem, members of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation Board of Directors, were named finalists for the 2014 Influential Women of Northwest Indiana recognition awards. Both were nominated by the Foundation for their work in Starke County.

Starke Democrats win big in election 2014

Election 2014 has come to a close with multiple victories for Starke County Democrats. In the prosecutor’s race, Incumbent, Nick Bourff (D) beat his challenger Timothy Lemon 3162 to 2595. Starke County elected Bill Dulin (D) as their next Starke County Sheriff. Dulin defeated Bill Bope 3534 to 2360. Brad Hazelton (D) defeated Republican challenger Talia Reed, 772 to 662, for the Starke County Council District 1 seat. Jennifer Davis (D) unseated Incumbent Tony Radkiewicz for Starke County Council District 2. Davis garnered 790 votes to Radkiewicz’s 761.

KNOX — Now that Halloween is behind us, Monica Miller, of Knox, is ready for the holiday season. Miller began decorating her giant spruce this past weekend and plans to have her home fully decked out for the holidays well before the Thanksgiving bird is roasting in the oven.
