INDOT Northwest hiring dozens for winter work

LAPORTE – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) aims to hire as many as 30 Seasonal winter program workers at a job fair next week. Potential employees should attend the job fair on Friday, Oct.17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (CST), located at the INDOT LaPorte District Office (315 E. Boyd Blvd., La Porte, 46350).

DTFSC partners with CDC for national tobacco education

STARKE Co. — Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County (DTFSC) has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct a national search to identify candidates who are willing to share tobacco-related stories for an upcoming national tobacco education campaign, “Tips from Former Smokers” (Tips).
DTFSC will assist the CDC in identifying individuals who fit the criteria and may be interested in participating in the 2016 Tips campaign.

Knox Planning Commission reschedules November meeting

KNOX — As the regular November meeting date for the Knox Planning Commission falls on Election Day, the next meeting of the Commission will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The meeting will include a public hearing on minor modifications to the City’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance.
The changes were made to clarify differentiation between permitted and special uses in the C-2 General Commercial District, but do not involve any change in policy. The changes were finalized and approved by the Commission during their October meeting.

Meet the candidates night

STARKE Co. — The Starke County Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual "Meet the Candidate's Night" Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will run from about 6 − 9 p.m.
This is a non-partisan event that gives voters a chance to hear where each candidate stands on the issues that matter to you.
There is no charge to attend.
For those who are unable to attend "Meet the Candidate's Night", The first "Wake up Starke County" forum will be held Friday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Knox High School.

BLPOA soup social and scarecrow contest

BASS LAKE — The Bass Lake Property Owners Association (BLPOA) is hosting their annual soup social and scarecrow contest. People who attend can enjoy "all you can eat homemade soups" and activities for the kids.
The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 at the BLPOA building on State Road 10.
The scarecrows will be judged in three categories: Best storybook character, funniest and scariest!

Knox reviews balanced calendar for 2015-2016 school year

Knox Schools Superintendent A.J. Gappa led discussion with members of the Knox School Board on the proposal to change schools to a balanced calendar starting with the 2015-2016 school year. “Public meetings were held last spring,” added Gappa, “and comments were favorable. Rochester’s been on a balanced calendar for six or seven years. Plymouth, Triton and John Glenn have indicated they will change. North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis also wish to stay on the same schedule as Knox.”
