Free hearing screening offered on mobile health clinic

LA PORTE — The IU Health La Porte Hospital mobile health clinic will offer a free hearing screening from 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 21 in La Porte.
The screening is for individuals ages 5 and older who would like to identify if they have hearing loss. It involves listening to a series of tones and sounds through comfortable headphones, and responding to the sounds when prompted. Screening takes about five minutes, and information will be available to those who need additional diagnostic follow-up for a potential hearing problem. Pre-registration is required by calling 219-325-7648.

2 in custody following alleged battery at Knox Park

KNOX — A 13-year-old-boy is in custody for the alleged battery and hospitalization of another boy, 14. On Monday, July 21 at approximately 6:33 p.m., Knox Police reports indicate the 13-year-old male entered Wythogan Park in a gold passenger car, occupied by five subjects. The 13-year-old suspect allegedly got out of the car and approached the 14-year-old male and hit him in the head. Witnesses told police the victim fell to the ground immediately, striking his head on the concrete walkway.

C.R. 700 bridge repairs underway

STARKE Co. — The Starke County Commission approved a revised bid for the repair of Bridge No. 27 over the Yellow River on C.R. 700 E. Construction was scheduled to start immediately.
The original bid of $106,000 was nearly double the Starke County Highway Department’s estimate, and was not initially approved, pending further investigation.
Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler met with Laporte Construction to evaluate what may have been included in the bid that is not required. As a result, the bid on the project was reduced to $78,000, with completion scheduled by Aug. 15.

Parents and other adults should not be a party to underage drinking

INDIANAPOLIS — The new social host law went into effect Tuesday, July 1. It is illegal to provide alcohol to minors and now it is illegal to provide a place for them to drink it. During the 2014 legislative session, the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking worked with legislators to pass the social host law, which was part of SB 236, makes it a Class B misdemeanor for adults who knowingly and intentionally provide a place for minors to drink. The offense becomes a Class A misdemeanor if the person has a prior unrelated conviction; and a level six felony if the consumption, ingestion,

Details released in Starke murder, carjacking case

STARKE Co. — Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff released the details of the case surrounding Gary Chavez and the murder of his estranged wife Kimberly Chavez today (Wednesday, June 11.)
According to the probable cause affidavit, the Starke County Sheriff Department's 911 Dispatch center received a call at approximately 4 p.m. Friday, June 6 from Bryant Wagner, a man who claimed to have been kidnapped in the parking lot at Bailey's Discount Center in North Judson.

KNOX — Starke County Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff filed a formal charge of murder against Gary W. Chavez, 57, of Knox, for his alleged involvement in the Friday, June 6 slaying of his estranged wife, Kimberly S. Chavez, 50, of Portage, who was discovered dead in Chavez's Knox home last Friday, after an alleged crime spree that involved three carjackings, a hostage situation, and led multiple police departments across four counties ended with Chavez shooting himself after he lost control of the vehicle he was traveling in on I-65 S. in Lake County.
