IRS phone scam sweeping nation

INDIANAPOLIS — Taxpayers nationwide are reporting unsolicited calls from scammers who claim to be with the IRS and demand immediate payment. It has been deemed the largest-ever phone fraud scam targeting taxpayers, costing victims an estimated $5 million in total. To date, 159 Hoosiers have reported this scam to Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s Office.

Squirrel hunting season begins today

The 2014-2015 fall hunting season has arrived with the opening of squirrel hunting season today, Aug. 15.
Squirrel season will continue through Jan. 31. Hunters may harvest both gray and fox squirrels, and can harvest up to five squirrels per day.  
Indiana’s abundant squirrel populations offer great hunting, and squirrel season can be an opportunity to introduce beginners to hunting.
When hunting, be sure of your target and beyond, respect property rights and get permission, and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

City prepares for budget approval process

KNOX — Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston updated the Knox City Council on the status of the 2015 budget, presenting a preliminary budget as well as a calendar for the approval process. The proposed budget totals $2.8 million.
According to Houston, the calendar has been accepted by the field representative of the Department of Local Government Finance, with final approval required by Nov. 1.

Walorski discusses veterans’ services with IU Health

STARKE Co. — Rep. Jackie Walorski (IN-02) recently met with representatives of IU Health Starke Hospital to discuss collaboration of veterans’ services. Walorski, a member of the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Conference Committee and the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, was present when President Obama signed H.R. 3230, designed to improve veterans’ access to care.

Telephone scammers lure in seniors

INDIANAPOLIS — Have you ever heard anything that just sounded too good to be true? As we all know, most of the time it is and Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller reminds Hoosiers to be on guard when receiving telephone calls from anyone offering something that just sounds too good.
Zoeller specifically cautions seniors as a lot of the time they are the target for telephone scammers in part because they are more likely to answer the phone.
Often times these scammers will promise to pay off debts or send a large sum of money if you give them access to your bank account. 

Bridge replacement discussed by Commission

The Starke County Commission addressed a number of topics at their Aug. 4 meeting, most involving the Starke County Highway Department or EMS services.
The first order of business was opening new bids for the replacement of two bridges, Bridge No. 86, on C.R. 900 S., west of C.R. 100 W., and Bridge No. 31, on C.R. 800 E., south of C.R. 25 N. The bids for the projects that originally were opened July 7 were higher than expected, and the projects were rebid.
