PLYMOUTH — Prior to last season, the Rockies hadn’t won an NLC wrestling championship since 1983. Now they can boast back-to-back titles.
The announcement Monday that this year’s Northern Lakes Conference Tournament would be cancelled left Plymouth the de facto champion after the Rockies ran the table in the dual meet portion of the conference schedule. The unbeaten run began with a 39-18 victory over Goshen back on Dec. 5 and finished up with a 68-6 rout of Concord on Jan. 16. Key to the run was a convincing 45-22 victory over perennial NLC powerhouse Elkhart Memorial on Jan. 9.
Head coach Bob Read would have liked to have backed up the flawless dual meet finish at the NLC Tournament, but he’ll take the championship anyway.
“Year in and year out there are (NLC) teams that are tough. In order to go back to back, you have to put something pretty special together,” said the Plymouth wrestling boss.
“I was just sad that the weather I guess beat us, and these kids didn’t have the opportunity to wrestle in the tournament.”
