Family Day draws fun loving folks to Park

PLYMOUTH — Members of the community came out in droves to the Coca-Cola Family Day at the amphitheater in Centennial Park this weekend, taking advantage of the opportunity to cool off and grab some free hotdogs, popcorn and pop. The day featured balloon artist Mr. Art, face painting, Adrienne Frailey on stage and, of course, free Coke products, popcorn and hotdogs, hundreds of which were grilled and passed out during the event.

Blueberry Festival carries high price tag

PLYMOUTH — The cost of putting on the four-day Blueberry Festival in Plymouth's Centennial Park carries a hefty price tag. This year's festival is expected to cost nearly $800,000.

Bringing in top entertainment, such as last year's Jake Owen and this year's headliners, Montgomery Gentry, are a portion of those expenses. But other items, such as security, portable toilets and other needs chew up even more of the budget.

The Blueberry Festival also has paid for upgrades to Park facilities, at their cost, without tax payer support.

Bourbon Post Office clerk headed into retirement

BOURBON — Karen Worsham will no longer be serving customers of the Bourbon Post Office.

Worsham decided to retire after 28 years on the job. Today, July 31 is her last day. She started out as a mail carrier delivering throughout the town. The first 12 years of service were spent going door to door and helping as a mail clerk.

Providing for children of all abilities is challenge for school systems

MARSHALL COUNTY — With as many as 1 million Indiana students attending schools last year, a small percentage of those are considered special needs students. That number is 170,014.

Local school districts are tasked with the challenge of providing a quality education for all students and this sometimes include additional services.

Blueberry Festival board members toured Argos facilities

ARGOS/PLYMOUTH — Although negotiations for space the 2015 Marshall County Blueberry Festival won’t even begin until after this year’s festival has come and gone, steps towards long-planning continue. The 2014 festival will mark 48 years of holding the Labor Day weekend festival in Plymouth.

Representatives from the Blueberry Festival Board have reportedly looked at several alternative sites throughout the county as a “what-if” back up in the event that the festival would move from Centennial Park in Plymouth.

Plymouth man charged with child molestation

PLYMOUTH — Jonas Salazar Olvera, 67, of Plymouth and Texas, was arrested Friday on charges of child molestation.

Olvera also had a previous charge pending from a 2009 incident with similar circumstances.

He is being held on a $115,010 bond.

Ice cream parlor preparing to scoop it out

PLYMOUTH — For the love of ice cream and ice cream lovers there’s going to be a new location to get hand dipped cones in Plymouth. Mooney’s Ice Cream Parlor’s grand opening will be Aug. 8.

“There’s three principals that I plan to follow to maintain a successful business here,” said Jon Webster, co-owner of Mooney’s. “You have to give a good product, a good portion at a good price and maintain a clean inviting family friendly atmosphere. I am going to do all three and more."

Beerenbrook Road drain repairs bid awarded at $412,067

PLYMOUTH — The storm sewer drain project at Beerenbrook and Jefferson Street will begin soon. Haskins Underground was awarded the bid at Monday evening's city of Plymouth Board of Public Works meeting. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
Also discussed in the meeting was Fire Chief Rod Miller reported the total monthly incidents and a request for EMT services. Read all the details in today's Pilot News.
