New offender monitoring system coming soon

MARSHALL COUNTY — Devices that will instantly measure an offender’s blood alcohol level will be utilized in Marshall County.

Ward Byers, Court Services, brought a contract before the Marshall County Commissioners for their approval. The contract is for alcohol monitoring with BI Corporation.

Scammers use local company's check to commit mail fraud

BOURBON — Faulkner Fabricating, a company out of Bourbon recently learned that a third party has been mailing out fraudulent checks to people across the country.

“It started out Thursday last week,” said Paula Johnson, an employee of the company. She received a call from a man who resided in Toledo, Ohio.

“He told me the check number and it didn’t match up with the run,” she said. “It had the routing number, account number, and our address.”

But the checks had left off the phone number for Faulkner Fabricating.

City budget totals $11.6 million

PLYMOUTH — The 2015 proposed budget totals $11.61 million and includes increases to cover the cost of elections, fire hydrant fees, a new computer system and employee insurance.

Toni Hutchings, clerk-treasurer for the city, said these items are included in the money to be allocated to the financial board and clerk treasurer - $980,744 - which is a 10.97 percent increase from last year.

US 31 Plymouth to South Bend to open Thursday

PLYMOUTH – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced today that the New U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth opens to traffic Thursday, Aug. 21.

Some restrictions will remain on the north end of the project near South Bend and the south end near Plymouth through the end of the year as construction continues.

The new U.S. 31 is 20 miles of divided, four-lane highway between the U.S. 20 Bypass in South Bend and U.S. 30 near Plymouth.

Color Run draws a crowd

PLYMOUTH — Runners, walkers and people in wheelchairs came out to support the Freedom Park Color Run Saturday. The annual event is a fundraiser for the planned playground for children of all abilities.

The annual run was updated this year with a little color, of the colored corn starch variety, bringing people to the finish line speckled in pink, blue, purple and green.

Lincoln Jr. High to amend reported bullying incidents

PLYMOUTH — The number of bullying incidents reported to the state this year by Lincoln Jr. High School was not accurate, school officials said. That number is being amended.

Of the 60 incidents reported, only about three were determined to be actually bullying incidents that meet the reporting criteria. The others were simply reports which included name-calling and other actions not fitting within the bullying criteria, according to Assistant Principal Craig Hopple.

Triton educators learn about suicide prevention

BOURBON — A workshop to help teachers and staff identify the signs of someone contemplating suicide was offered the day before students returned to school last week.

“We are going to take probably one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do and make it simple, notice I did not say easy. It is never easy,” began Hunter Randall corporate trainer for the Bowen Center.

Latest Apple Festival Queen Will Soon Blossom

NAPPANEE --- The contestants are getting ready for the Miss Apple Blossom Scholarship Pageant as part of the Apple Blossom Festival next month.
Application deadline is just hours away -- 5 p.m. Friday -- so there is still a chance for late entrants.
This will be the 39th pageant. The pageant is meant to be educational, fun and most of all, memories of a special hometown event.
Pam Shaw is the Pageant Coordinator. She has been on the Festival committee for 14 years.
Through her seasons of dealing with the scholarship pageant, she has come away impressed with the level of competition.

Legends Come Home to Honor Bremen Queeen

BREMEN -- If ever there was an important tradition in safe hands, it is Bremen's Junior Miss.
The 50th Distinguished Young Women's program took place Saturday night in a very welcoming Bowen Auditorium on the high school campus.
Brooke Bahr took the 2015 title with ease. Her vocal solo and guitar playing alone, her commanding stage presence, the bounce in her routine separating her from the pack in the fitness competition . . . there was little doubt the best competitor this night won it all.
