Steered Straight: A Wonderful Donation

August 29, 2014

NAPPANEE -- Lane Flowers made $17,450 at the county 4-H auction for his latest project, a steer called Cornbelly.
He gave it all away.
Not part of it.
All of it.
Seed to Feed received the donation. Flowers made the check presentation at the annual 4-H awards banquet.
Mayor Larry Thompson of Nappanee gave Flowers a key to the city, a "Community Spirit Award," an inspirational book and even slipped in, as he so often does, a donation from the mayor and his wife, this time to Seed and Feed.
By the way, Lane is just now a freshman at NorthWood High School.

You Know Max

August 29, 2014

NAPPANEE -- Everyone knows Max.
Perhaps that is why Max Bigler is the Grand Marshall of this year's Nappanee Apple Festival, Sept. 18-21.
As you go around town and talk to folks, you probably get as far as, "Do you know Max . . . " before almost everyone will have a story on the guy and will fill in the last name before you can.
Max gets around. It is thought if the city needs help at the 2020 Census, all they will have to do is ask Max.

August 24, 2014

WAKARUSA -- The bells sounded and the stream of giggling humanity snaked from the classrooms, down the stairs to the lunchroom.
It was the opening lunch hour on the opening day for Wan-Nee Schools, this one at the NorthWood Middle school.
Principal Bruce Rice and assistant principal Kyle Martin were solidly in charge.
There were the latest timed announcements to be made, including lunch and playground rules to be reviewed as a sense of renewal at campuses swept across the district.
