WALKERTON — Vurtis Owen “V.O.” Swank, 74, of Walkerton passed away at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 in his home. He was born Jan. 16, 1939 in Union Township, St. Joseph County to the late Wilber and Eleanor (Howey) Swank. He was united in marriage in Osceola on Oct. 2, 1965 to the former Karen Sue Wood.
Mr. Swank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen S. Swank; daughter, Jennifer Fry of Walkerton; three sons, Jeffrey (Erika) Swank of Nappanee, Kenneth (Angela) Swank of North Liberty and Benjamin (Melinda) Swank of Walkerton; eight grandchildren, Iris Fry, Rex Fry, Ananda (Brian) Russell, Shanell Swank, Henry Paterson, Aiden Swank, Taylor Swank and Jordan Swank and two great-grandchildren, Abel and Hudson Russell. He is also survived by four nieces, Anita Williams, Carolyn Crouch, Marilyn Reel and Jean Cambell; nephew, Robert Grubbs and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and their families. His parents and a sister, Virginia Grubbs preceded him in death.
Mr. Swank lived most of his life in Walkerton. He graduated from Lakeville High School in 1958. He attended Purdue University and retired in 2000 as an engineering technician at Honeywell after 35 years of service. He was a Marshall County 4-H leader for 30 years. He loved camping, genealogy and was a Civil War enthusiast. He was a master gardener and loved gardening, camping etc. His decisions were always based around his family’s needs and values.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan St., Lakeville. Graveside services and burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery, Bremen. Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
