Trojans win both openers at New Prairie

NEW CARLISLE – Triton’s boys and girls basketball teams earned a sweep over New Prairie on the road in New Carlisle Tuesday night.
The girls rallied with a 22-point fourth quarter to hand the Lady Cougars a 55-49 defeat, while the Trojans reprised an earlier loss to the Cougars with a convincing 57-40 victory.

TROJANS 57,
COUGARS 40
OK. So, where was that the first time?
That’s what Jason Groves would like to know.
“Our kids were really fired up after what happened in the first game,” said the Triton boys basketball coach after his Trojans ran over New Prairie, 57-40, on the opening night of the 49th annual Bi-County basketball tournament.
In their first meeting, on Dec. 28, New Prairie beat the Trojans by two points, hitting a game-winning 3-pointer at the end.
There was none of that this time, as the Trojans pounded New Prairie on the boards and shot the lights out of the Cougar gym, sinking 70 percent of their three-point attempts.

LADY TROJANS 55,
LADY COUGARS 49
Just a week ago, Triton’s girls pounded New Prairie by 22 points.
A little too easy, perhaps?
“I’d like to say our kids weren’t looking past New Prairie, but they are kids; there’s always some of that,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman after his team rallied from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to edge the Cougars, 55-49.
Jaela Meister’s three-point play with 5:15 remaining gave the Trojan girls their first lead of the night. They then iced the decision by sinking 12 free throws down the stretch.
