BOURBON — What a difference a day can make.
Twenty-four hours after suffering a 13-0 loss to South Bend Riley in its opener on Wednesday, Triton’s baseball team bounced back with an 11-0, five-inning victory over visiting Oregon-Davis at home in Bourbon Thursday night.
“It was a different day,” said Triton head coach Rodney Younis. “It was our first game; we hadn’t been out here much and seen a lot of live pitching. I thought it took us a little bit of time tonight to even get the bats going, but I thought it started to come. We strung a couple solid hits together, and that was good to see.”
Jayden Hargrave pitched a one-hit gem going four innings on the mound for the Trojans, striking out seven while surrendering two walks. Gunnar Golden loaded up the bases in the top of the fifth but worked his way out of the self-imposed jam, fanning three straight OD batters to complete the shutout in his first outing on the hill.
“He for sure came out to throw today,” said OD coach Ryan Julian of Hargrave. “He had a lot of nasty stuff. There was no way around it, our guys just didn’t react to it, and we couldn’t really put the ball in play sometimes. This is the first time that we’ve scored zero this year, so he must have had something special today.”
“I thought Jayden pitched an excellent game for us tonight,” said Younis. “Gunnar came in, we wanted to give him some more pitches. It was his first time pitching, and he put himself in a tough situation, loading the bases with no outs, but he worked himself out of it and that’s a sign of good things.”
Meanwhile, the Trojans notched seven hits at the plate — including three doubles by Landon Kaufman, Gabe McPherson and Cole Creighbaum during a big six-run fourth — and capitalized on four OD errors, four walks and a hit batsman in the win. The home team also utilized some aggressive baserunning in its first win of the season, stealing home twice and scoring three more runs on wild pitches by OD’s Cameron Clark, who slipped to 0-3 on the young season.
