Tough losses for Glenn, CGA in sectional openers

February 12, 2014

WALKERTON — It was just opening night of the Class 3A girls basketball Sectional 19 tournament at John Glenn High School Tuesday night, but it had the feel of championship night.
South Bend St. Joseph showed why it is the tourney favorite, dispatching Culver Girls Academy in the opener 62-29, but the game of the night was between 15-game winners Glenn and Rochester in the nightcap.
Unfortunately for the home crowd, after 12 lead changes and seeing the score tied on eight different occasions, the Lady Falcons were edged by the Lady Zebras in the waning seconds, 59-57, to end their fine season.
Friday’s semifinals will match St. Joe against Jimtown at 6 p.m. and Rochester will play Mishawaka Marian around 7:30.

These two teams came in with the most wins in the field and the excitement of the match-up lived up to expectations.
The scored was knotted five times in the fourth quarter alone, the last with just 45 seconds remaining and Rochester with possession of the ball.
“They had success all game with penetration and so we knew they would try to get to the rim,” said Glenn head coach Kyle Amor. “Our message was to get in front of the ball and stop the penetration. They were able to turn the corner and got a decent shot.”

St. Joe was just 4-4 in the rugged Northern Indiana Conference, but 9-0 against all other opponents. The four losses were to Class 4A teams with a combined record of 26-6 heading into the playoffs.
