PLYMOUTH — The Post 27 Diamond Spyders lost big in a rematch with Patriot Tourney champ Bristol Post 143, with a final score of 17-1 in eight innings at Bill Nixon Field Tuesday night.
Cain Crowley led the game off for Bristol with a double. With one out, Diamond Spyders pitcher Kyle Liedtky walked two straight batters, loading the bases. Then Brock Logan hit a sac fly, bringing Crowley home for 1 of his 3 RBIs on the night. The next batter up, Mason Eldridge, singled into left, bringing in two more. From that point on, Bristol never looked back, scoring runs in all but two innings.
The Spyders were able to get through the second inning unscathed, but then the errors started to pile up in the third. The Spyders committed three of their five total errors in the inning, allowing Bristol to convert that into three more runs.
The early walks and the errors were the major factors in the outcome of the game according to Post 27 coach Will Shepherd.
“Kyle didn’t help himself tonight by walking the bases loaded,” said Shepherd. “They have three good left-handed hitters in a row. Three of the best left-handed hitters, I think, in the state of Indiana. They are tough to get out no matter what, but you can’t hurt yourself by walking guys.
“The first inning, the problems were pitching caused. The other innings, we started out lackadaisical on defense. We kicked the ball on what should have been routine plays, which just extended the inning and put the pitcher in the stretch when it could have been a quick inning.”
The score came to 6-0 after the third inning. Bristol would add one more run in each of the next two innings beforePost 27 finally got its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Lafollette led off the inning for the Spyders with a double and was later brought home on a single by Braydon Davidson.
From there, Bristol would add two more in the sixth, making the score 10-1. The visitors finished off the game with seven runs in the eighth highlighted by a grand slam by Crowley, who finished the game with two doubles, a homer, and four RBIs while going 4-for-6 from the plate.
“This is one of the best teams in the state of Indiana,” said Shepherd of Bristol. “They are a good team and are tough to get out because one through nine, they present problems with left-handed batters and right-handed batters. We have played them four times this year now, and two of those times we played them tough. Tonight obviously wasn’t our best effort. They are a formidable foe.”
