WESTVIEW — Three days after the Bremen softball team earned a sectional title at Westview, the Lions baseball team followed suit with a thrilling 8-7 sectional championship win in eight innings over the host Warriors at the Class 2A Westview Baseball Sectional Monday.
The two teams were locked in a 5-5 tie at the end of regulation before Westview jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.
With two out in the Lions’ last chance at the plate, freshman clean-up hitter Drew Coffel deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to score three runs for the game-winner and Bremen’s first sectional championship since 2001.
Coffel finished the game going 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, while starting pitcher Bobby Cornett finished 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Jacob Bennitt, who earned the win on the mound relieving Cornett in the sixth, drove in two runs of his own to help his cause.
Cornett surrendered seven hits with one walk for three earned runs while striking out five lasting five innings.
Bennitt gave up four hits and a walk for two earned runs with two strikeouts after pitching six shutout innings as the Lions opened sectional play with a win over Fremont Thursday night.
Bremen advanced to play the winner of the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Sectional on the road in Whiting on Saturday. The Lions were looking for their first regional crown since 1994.
