Ruth Ellen Fisher
Sept. 23, 1918 - June 14, 2014
KOKOMO — Ruth Ellen Fisher, passed away at home on June 14, 2014 in Kokomo. Ruth Ellen was born on Sept. 23, 1918 back a long lane on her maternal grandfather Bruno Brunenmiller’s section of land in northeastern Howard Co. to Clarence W. and Dorothy (Colescott) Fawcett.
Howard and Liberty Township grade schools provided her early education followed by graduation from Greentown High School in 1936. A love of learning, a desire to share this love with young students, and the wholehearted support of her husband resulted in her pursuing a teaching degree which began with part-time classes at the new Indiana University, Kokomo followed by graduation from Butler University in 1960 and a Master’s in Education degree from Ball State University in 1964. Earning her degrees took long hours commuting while balancing studying and family but the dream to become a teacher was worth all the effort. It culminated in 25 years of service with the Western School Corporation. One of the most interesting stories she would tell was about the 1965 tornado which took the upper walls of her classroom at Alto school but left her aquarium, with peacefully swimming fish, standing in the exposed corner.
Before and after retirement she was an active volunteer at her church homes, first, Hillsdale UMC and then Grace UMC, Howard Regional Hospital, the Each-One-Teach-One program teaching English as a second language, and tutoring youngsters to become better readers. Need something baked, dishcloths knitted, produce from her garden, a place to stay or a helping hand, call Ruth Ellen as she loved sharing and opening her home to visitors and family. Helping others added depth, a sense of Christian accomplishment and enormous pleasure to her life.
Her parents, sisters Rebecca (Russell) Kaufman and Marietta Fawcett, sister-in-law Susann Rayl, and her beloved husband, Fredrick L. Fisher preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughters, Jane Ellen (Alan) Felchuk North Judson and Joyce (Harold) Powell Evansville, grandchildren, Caroline (Scott) Koenig, Adam Powell, Owen Powell Evansville, Glen (Nancy) Powell Chicago, Ill. and Victoria (Justin) Stone Tacoma, Wash., great-grandchildren, Lillian and Sofia Koenig, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Funeral services celebrating Ruth Ellen’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday June 21, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry, with Dr. Mark Hill and Rev. Ted Colescott officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown. Friends may visit with the family from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillsdale UMC, 475 E 100 N, Kokomo, IN 46901 or Grace UMC, 212 W. Walnut, Kokomo, IN 46901. Messages of condolence may be left at www.hasler-stout.com.
