Rockies rumble in Rochester forfeit

August 31, 2013

PLYMOUTH — It was rain shortened, but it will count as a win. The IHSAA will decide the score.
With constant lightening in the area Plymouth and Rochester were unable to continue their Friday night game at Plymouth. After a Plymouth 29-yard touchdown run by Michael Hartman with 9:24 to play in the third quarter, officials delayed the game for lightening the first time with the Rockies in front 35-0.
With the decision not to resume the game it will be up to the IHSAA to decide if that will remain the final or whether it will be a 2-0 forfeit decision.
Hartman’s run was just the cap of a breakout night for the Rockies fullback. With 161 yards at halftime and a touchdown, he added runs of 24 and 29 on the first drive of the second half with a second score. Hartman’s power combined with his breakaway speed was a problem for Rochester all night long.
“Hartman had a huge night,” said Plymouth Coach John Barron. “He’s a beast, and we have to ride him.”
Some other weapons emerged as well. A week ago Justin Drudge had three touches, one of them for 60 yards and a score against Bremen. On Friday, he had five carries for 22 yards, caught a pass for another 15 and also threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Trent Briles. Fellow wing Dakota Brooke also scored another touchdown in this week’s contest.
“I liked our offense against Bremen but tonight I thought Jack (Barron) made some sophomore mistakes at quarterback that we can’t have,” said Barron. “That’s a position that we have to keep getting better at.
“Our defense did really well. We had to stop their dive and their power, and I think we did that for most of the night.”
In spite of the strong showing of the Rockie “D”, Rochester running back Jacob Howdeshell showed his determination, running hard in the first half for 78 yards on 12 first half carries.
“I like our team,” said Barron. “But with the NLC season getting ready to start we really have to step it up.”
