Boys tennis
Plymouth defeats Panthers
Plymouth’s boys tennis team bounced back in Northern Lakes Conference play with a 4-1 win on the road at NorthWood Tuesday.
John Hunter beat Mitchell Keiser 6-4, 6-1 at 1 singles, John Gerard defeated Luke Stump 6-0, 6-3 at 2 singles, and Nate Knapp put away Ryan Menzie 6-4, 6-2 at 3 singles as the Pilgrims swept singles play.
Ryan Johnson and Braydon Davidson rallied from a first-set loss at 2 doubles to beat NorthWood’s Devyn Maugel and Nick Myers 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, while the Panthers got their only win at 1 doubles, where Quinn Stillson and Caleb Yoder combined for a three-set win over Matt Flynn and Max Holloway, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Plymouth moves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Pilgrims resume play tonight at Bremen in a special “Smash Cancer” fundraiser.

Knox tops Bremen
Knox’s tennis team took a 4-1 Northern State Conference match from Bremen at home Tuesday.
Davy Johnston was a winner in two 6-2 sets over Tommy Foster at 1 singles, and Jordan Anderson beat Byce DeVine 6-0, 6-2 at 2 singles.
Curtis Scherer and Scott Farus defeated Bremen’s Austin Ingle and Tyler LaFlash in an extended super tiebreak at 1 doubles, 7-6, 2-6 (12-10), and Daulton Materna and Christian Jimenez shut out Ryker Hand and Noah Miller at 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.
Bremen’s sole winner was Krent Hueni, as he battled back from a first-set shutout to stop Hunter Gilbert, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 at 3 singles.
Bremen slides to 6-6 with a 2-2 NSC mark. The Lions are back in action at home for a special “Smash Cancer” fundraiser with Plymouth tonight.

Jimtown downs Glenn
Jimtown defeated John Glenn by a score of 3-2 in a Northern State Conference tennis meet in Walkerton Tuesday. Alec Runyan won in three sets at 3 singles, defeating Jimtown’s Brock Johnson 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Andrew McDonald and Evan Rhodes combined to beat Ben Janowski and Adam DeShone in two 6-1 sets at 1 doubles.
Glenn moves to 3-5 overall with a 1-3 NSC record.

Boys soccer
Strong 2nd half cues Culver win
Tied at 1-1 at the half, Culver ran off five goals while pitching a second-half shutout in a 6-1 win over Pioneer in a game pushed back because of the heat in Culver Tuesday.
Derek Keller scored two goals — including the game’s first in the 12th minute — and recorded an assist for Culver in the win, while Nick Pritz also found the back of the net twice.
Jordan Sanders and Henrick Bill each registered a goal and an assist, and Marshall Anderson made an impressive 14 saves in goal for the winners.

Lions tear ECA
Danny Reynoso and Roberto Gonzalez each scored twice, and Bremen beat visiting Elkhart Christian in a heat-delayed game Tuesday at Jane’s Park.
Gonzalez opened the scoring early with a penalty kick in the third minute, and Reynoso snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal off a Brison Shorter assist in the 19th minute.
Sam Lacher and Korey Alexander also scored for Bremen in the victory. Ricky Reynoso, Thad BonDurant and Clayton Philips all had assists, and Austin Adams made four saves in goal for the Lions.

Eagles rally past Logan
Culver Military’s boys soccer team overcame a sluggish start, rallying back from an early 2-0 deficit with three goals before halftime en route to a 4-2 win over visiting Logansport Tuesday.
Nick Bissonnette scored twice — the first the equalizer in the game’s ninth minute less than a minute after Logan’s second score and the second the only goal of the second half — with two assists, while Samuel Lind and Sebastian Padilla also scored for CMA. Tae Ahn made five saves for the home team.

Plymouth’s cross country teams earned a split in a Northern Lakes Conference meet on the road at NorthWood Tuesday.
The Lady Pilgrims won their meet 16-47, while the Panthers outran Plymouth’s boys 19-44.

Lady Pilgrims win at Clay
Plymouth made short work of host Clay on the road in South Bend Tuesday, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16.
Libbie Portteus and Lacy Poczik led the Lady Pilgrims at the net with eight and seven kills and three and four blocks, respectively.
Haley Harrell set 23 assists with 12 digs, while Cassie Quissell finished with 18 digs and three blocks as Plymouth moved to 7-4 on the year.

Bremen’s volleyball team handed its hosts a three-game defeat on the road at Bethany Christian Tuesday, 25-21, 25-17, 25-18.
Cassie Sears finished with 16 kills and two blocks, and Chelsea Huppert recorded 13 kills and seven digs.
Sabrina Gilley passed out an impressive 31 set assists to her teammates, while Brooke Fitch finished with 15 digs for the visitors, who moved to 9-4.

Culver Girls Academy hung on through two extended games to beat visiting South Bend Washington in three games at home in Culver Tuesday, 25-16, 28-26, 27-25.
Katy Bjornson racked up 17 kills with nine digs, while Rachel Simon recorded a prolific 31 assists with 10 digs and two aces.
Sarah Boland served up three aces, and Kayla Trefren finished with four blocks.
CGA improves to 3-5 with the win.

Girls golf
Rochester nips Lions
Bremen’s girls golf team fell to host Rochester by nine strokes, 176-185, at Mill Creek Tuesday.
The Lady Lions were led by Alex Homann’s 43 followed by Kayleigh Daily’s 45. Melissa Krathwohl and Kaitlyn Ahlenius also broke 50 at 48 and 49, respectively. Gina Thornton shot 67 for the Lady Lions.
