Spyders open Terre Haute tourney with shutout loss
The Diamond Spyders recorded just one hit against Terre Haute Post 346’s Damon Olds, and Plymouth Post 27 opened the Terre Haute American Legion Baseball Tournament with a 2-0 loss on Thursday.
Shay Hepler, coming off a 3-for-4, four RBI performance in a win over Logansport Tuesday, had the Spyders’ lone hit against Olds in the fourth inning, but he was ultimately left stranded at second. All total, just four Post 27 players reached base as Olds struck out 11 while giving up three walks and Hepler’s hit going the distance in the near no-hitter.
Terre Haute finally broke a 0-0 stalemate between Olds and Spyders starter Jason Ferguson with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Ferguson walked in a run, and reliever Wes Burkholder walked in a second straight run in his first batter faced before settling in for Post 27.
The trouble started when Cody Thornton led off the frame with a line single and stole second. Connor Pierce was hit by a pitch, and Craig Peters singled on a grounder through the five gap to load the bags before Ferguson walked nine hitter Greg Hannum to put Terre Haute up 1-0. Burkholder walked Zach Milam as the top of the order came back around before inducing a line out to center and a ground out to short to stop the bleeding.
The Spyders slip to an even 3-3 with Thursday’s tournament-opener. Post 27 plays Bristol Post 143 today at 3:30 p.m. and will follow with a pair of games Saturday and one final game Sunday before returning home to play Mishawaka Post 161 on the road Monday at 7 p.m. The Diamond Spyders return to their home field next Thursday for a rematch with post 161, also scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bill Nixon Field.
