Lady Trojans win Sectional 51 title
Mallorie Jennings fanned 10 while allowing just one earned run in a complete seven-inning outing inside the circle, and Triton racked up 12 hits as the Lady Trojans brought home just the second softball sectional championship in school history with a 10-5 victory over Westville at the Class A South Central (Union Mills) Sectional Friday night.
Allyson Brown collected three hits with a double, while Hannah Jennings also doubled as part of a two-hit, three-RBI night at the plate for Triton, which out-hit the home team on the scoreboard 12-8. Mallorie Jennings recorded two hits and a double of her own to help her cause inside the circle.
The Trojans jumped on top with a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Krystal Sellers.
Triton tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning as Amanda Warrick crossed home plate on an error to start the scoring, Mallorie Jennings doubled in Lillie Berger, and Hannah Jennings ripped a bases-clearing double to left with the bags juiced to break the game open 6-0. Triton plated another four runs to take a 10-0 lead in the top of the sixth, and the game was never in doubt after that.
Westville stayed alive with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, however.
An RBI single by Kristen Wilson, a passed ball, a groundout by McKenzi Garner and a two-run error gave Westville life. The threat came to an end when Mallorie Jennings induced a groundout by Westville pitcher Katie Piotrowski, and Triton hung on through the seventh for the sectional title after a runner-up finish at South Central last season.
Lexee Lemler finished with two RBIs behind Hannah Jennings’ team-leading three, and Warrick, Mallorie Jennings and Berger each scored twice.
Triton — which received 17 votes in the last ICGSA Class A polls — now advances to the regional round of the tournament at No. 1-ranked Lakewood Park Christian next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
