Rachel Salazar
Sept. 13, 1934 - Sept. 26, 2013
Rachel R. Salazar, 79, of Mishawaka, Ind. passed away at 9:15 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Memorial Hospital, in South Bend,.
Rachel was born on Sept. 13, 1934, in Pharr, Texas, to Mauricio and Ramona Reyes. She married Manuel Salazar in 1953 in Texas. They had nine children together. Her family – especially her boys – kept her on her toes constantly, but she never hesitated to share with friends or strangers (who would then become fast friends) that they all were the loves of her life. She remained a devoted mother and grandmother throughout, and was the heart and soul of the Salazar family.
She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Nov. 21, 1972. Rachel attended Miami Trails Congregation faithfully. She pioneered in the full time ministry for 14 years starting on June 1, 1999, until the time of her passing. Family and faith were the cornerstones of her life, and her family takes tremendous comfort in the fact that she passed faithfully, serving her Creator.
Rachel will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as a woman of incredible love and deep faith. She enjoyed making jewelry, visiting friends, baking banana nut bread and Chocolate Charlie candy, passing along recipes to her grandchildren, and laughing about the antics her kids used to get into, while growing up on King Road, in Plymouth,. Her laugh could lift a room and her hugs were often the cure to any ailment. Rachel was a strong woman and lived her life free of complaint; she was someone special, someone to admire. Rachel will be deeply missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Rachel is survived by her children, Rose (Kevin) Ervin of Columbus, Ohio, Raquel (Roberto) Matamoros of Houston, Texas, Jesse (Sandy) Salazar of Plymouth, Armando (Laurel) Salazar of Bremen, Felix (Nikki) Salazar of Hamlet, Randy (Sue) Salazar of South Bend, Elizabeth Salazar of Fort Wayne, Albert Salazar of South Bend, and Jay Salazar of Plymouth; her grandchildren, Brandon (Katie) Sherwood of Plymouth, Danielle (Jamie) Lindstrom of Plymouth, Erik (Angelica) Scheimen, Travis Scheimen of Huntingdon, Tenn., Joshua and Jessica Salazar of Plymouth, Derek Salazar of Hamden, Conn., Britni Salazar of Chicago, Ill. Delia (Matt) Nichols of Flint, Mich., Dehani Salazar of Hamburg, Mich., Zach (Melissa) Salazar of Buckley, Mich., Kyle (Amanda) Salazar of South Bend, Taylor, Skylar, Cameron and Keely Rodriguez and Mason Zent of Fort Wayne, Mariah, of South Bend, Jordan, Ryan, Janessa and Enrique Salazar of Plymouth; several great-grandchildren; and her brother, Hector Rodriguez of Weslaco, Texas.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
