Pilgrims outlast Triton, 45-39

November 22, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth point guard Haley Harrell didn’t score a lot of points in Thursday’s thriller with Triton — fact is, she only took six shots the entire contest. But the two she knocked down might just have been the two most important buckets in the game.
Harrell’s back-to-back triples late in the third quarter erased a 6-0 mini-run by the Lady Trojans at the start of the period, fellow junior Hunter Stevens’ buzzer-beater from the baseline gave Plymouth a narrow 30-29 advantage going into the fourth, and the Pilgrims held on for an eventual 45-39 win over ICGSA Class A No. 9 Triton at home at The Rock.
“Haley kind of got us going; she stroked a couple 3s up top, and then that just kind of loosened it up inside for us,” said Plymouth head coach Dave Duncan.
“I just think it was about kids making plays. When Haley’s on the floor, I’m very confident in what’s going to happen, and she does a great job finding her teammates. I think that our team’s got a long way to go, but we’re headed in the right direction.”
The area-rivalry game lived up to its billing with 10 lead changes and three ties throughout the night following last year’s 39-36 overtime win by the Pilgrims.
