No. 1 Lady Cats trump Trojans

January 31, 2014

HAMLET — For the first quarter and a half, Triton was right in it.
But as things so often do with Class A No. 1 Oregon-Davis, the Lady Trojans’ early deficits snowballed fast.
OD closed the second quarter on a quick 12-0 run to take a 39-21 halftime lead, then used a 22-4 third quarter to run out to a commanding 36-point lead and put the game out of reach. The end result was a 75-35 victory by the Lady Cats at home at The Den in Hamlet Thursday.
“So often it does (snowball) with them. They get confidence once they start scoring and getting stops,” said Triton head coach Adam Heckaman. “They feed on that, we hang our heads a little bit when we can’t get the ball in the basket and then we let up on the other end. And when you let up on the other end against this team, that’s what happens.”
Tempo was the key. The Lady Cats did what they do so well and used their fullcourt pressure to create 35 turnovers by the Trojans for numerous fast break opportunities and more than 40 total points off turnovers.
The visitors weathered the storm early, keeping the game to within four points until midway through the second frame. But missed opportunities and early foul trouble for Triton leading scorer Kyle Mason escalated into more turnovers, and, after a 15-3 run by OD closed out the opening half, the Trojans were never in the game again against their sectional rivals.
