BREMEN — For four years, the Bremen Kiwanis has put together a triathlon for kids ages 5-16.
The Bremen race is a challenge of physical fitness which includes swimming, biking and running. The children are divided up into divisions and subdivided into age groups. These kids practice and prepare for this event.
Division I is for all kids ages 5-10 on the day of the race.
Groups are then broken down even more into 5-6 year olds, 7-8 year olds, and 9-10 year olds.
These kids swim 25 yards, bike a mile, and run .6 mile.
Division II is for kids ages 11-16 on the day of the race. Age groups are also broken into 11-12 year olds, 13-14 year olds, and 15-16 year olds.
Division II has a longer course. They must swim 50 yards, bike 2.5 miles, and run 1 mile.
After all of the kids have completed the triathlon, there is a post-race celebration at the park to reward their hard work.
That is also when the winners are recognized.
This year 91 kids participated in the triathlon on Saturday, July 20.
“All of the kids worked very hard and should be commended for their efforts,” said Larry Yelaska, Bremen Elementary-Middle School principal and the triathlon’s organizer.
“Many trained this summer and it takes a lot of dedication, determination and commitment to complete a triathlon. We are looking forward to seeing them compete next year in the fifth annual Bremen Kiwanis Kids Triathlon. For next year’s race date and other information like us on Facebook at Bremen Kids Triathlon.”
The triathlon depends on sponsors. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals donated money, time and resources to make the triathlon and the post-race celebration a success.
Bremen Kiwanis, Larry Yelaska, and those working to put on the triathlon thanked the sponsors of all of the past triathlons.
