LaVille teams sweep Bremen at Dale E. Cox Gym

January 22, 2014

LAKEVILLE — Fifteen proved to be something of a magic number for LaVille’s basketball teams Tuesday.
The Lancers’ girls and boys squads surrendered a mere 15 points apiece in the second half and collected a pair of double-digit victories over Bremen in the TCU Bi-County Tournament opening round at LaVille’s Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.
In the nightcap, junior guard Blake Berger erupted for a game-high 26 points, and senior guard Cameron Gurtner added 16 points to lead the Lancers to a 56-38 win over the Lions.
In the girls tussle, LaVille’s Hannah Herbster registered a double-double with 24 points and 12 boards, and junior guard McKenzie Leed scored 17 of her 18 points after the intermission as the Lancers pulled away by a 52-36 count.
The Lancers face Argos in Friday’s semifinal, while the Lady Lancers take on defending tourney champion Oregon-Davis in second-round action Thursday. Both games tip off at 8 p.m. at LaVille.

For LaVille, one particular play without a whistle mattered more than any play with a whistle.
Already saddled with two fouls midway through the initial stanza, Berger leaped high, rejected a Bremen shot in the paint and gained possession, all in the same motion, and headed to the other end of the floor with no stoppage.
“That’s the play of the game, because if (Berger) is called for his third foul I have to take him out,” LaVille head coach Michael Edison said. “He turned to stay out of the way and then went up. I don’t think it was a foul, but you just never know.”

LaVille head coach Kevin McCullough’s halftime speech included a word or two about rebounding and valuing the basketball.
After piling up 12 turnovers and yielding 12 Bremen offensive rebounds in the opening half, LaVille trimmed its second-half miscues to five and allowed just two offensive boards, all while using a 2-3 half-court trap to create 13 Bremen turnovers.
“I asked them at halftime, ‘Girls, why can’t we get a rebound?’” McCullough, whose team trailed 21-20 at the break, said. “At halftime I said I’d take seven turnovers and we had five. That’s extra shots we got in the second half that we didn’t get in the first. We also shot better in the second half. Everybody wearing white tonight contributed.”
For the game, Bremen threw the ball away 22 times, hit just 30 percent from the field, and misfired on 10 of its 16 tries from the charity stripe.
“(LaVille) came out and hit a couple baskets and we got back on our heels,” Bremen head coach Tonja Lucchese said of the second half. “They started the second half in a 2-3 trap, trapped the sideline and we got rattled.”
