Lady Pilgrims fall in frigid 5-inn. contest at Warsaw

April 19, 2013

WARSAW — After a week of what seemed like non-stop rain, Plymouth and Warsaw managed to salvage a five-inning softball game on Friday. Originally scheduled to be a home game for Plymouth, the field at Centennial Park was filled to the brim with 80 percent of the field underwater. Warsaw managed to get their field to be playable, but the weather continued to make conditions more difficult.
With 39 degree weather and constant wind creating even colder conditions, both teams bundled up to face off in the third Northern Lakes Conference game of the season. The whole game was full of big hitting and lots of baserunners and unfortunately Warsaw just had more players cross home plate. The result was a 14-4 loss by the Lady Pilgrims.
Plymouth changed the lineup order, and it seemed to work well because by the end of the second inning, Plymouth was leading Warsaw 4-1. The second inning was a positive start as bases were loaded in the top and Morgan O’Neal blasted a fence-rattling double knocking in Bailey Hatfield, Bailey Brown and Britney Horvath.
As Plymouth took the field again, light snow and small hailstones started falling, and the cold air became frigid. The Pilgrims continued to fight defensively, but Warsaw battled back and regained the lead with strong hits and a three-run home run to make the score 7-4.
Although Plymouth continued hitting the ball, no more runs were plated. Warsaw on the other hand, kept getting hits to fall and continued with two more homers and a walk-off two-RBI single to seal the five inning, 14-4 victory.
The game was a pitcher’s worst nightmare because of the weather, but Plymouth’s Britney Horvath remained composed in the circle. The Pilgrims played with heart, taking pride in that small victory.
Plymouth turns around today to host a tripleheader against Pioneer and Whiting. Game times for Plymouth are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
