Lady Dragons win Argos tourney opener
ARGOS — Argos beat Rochester 5-0 as Girls Soccer Sectional 35 opened Monday at Eugene Snyder Field .
A pair of sophomores combined for a goal in the 12th minute as Hannah Harrell dribbled a ball deep into the Zebra defensive half and then flicked a square pass to Valerie Rospopo. The outside midfielder hit a hard, looping shot that hit the far side net and put the hosts up 1-0. The Dragons outshot the Zebras 10-1 in the first half but led only 1-0. Keeper Catherine Wresien had several point-blank saves in a crowded penalty area to keep the visitors in the game.
“This team has had trouble finishing at times, but our defense has become rather stingy so we have time to work things out,” Argos Coach Jon Alcorn said. “Hannah (Harrell) gave us a nice boost with a goal and pair of assists. It was nice to see us come out strong to start the second half. I credit Rochester, too. They put a good side out there, and even when we separated a bit, they kept competing.”
After assisting the opening goal, Harrell finished a through ball from Courtney Dunlap just two minutes into the second frame to start a Dragon outburst. Dunlap scored twice on passes from Shelby Sanders and Mariah Lineberry, and the lead was 4-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Harrell got her second assist on a ball finished by Katie Williams to complete the scoring.
The Dragons’ defense, led by junior goalkeeper Jenni Fishburn, notched its fourth shutout in the last six games, allowing only two goals total in the span. One was a penalty kick and the other come after a blocked defensive clear.
Argos led the Zebras 25-5 and 10-3 in shots on goal and corner kicks respectively, and moves to 10-6-1 on the year.
Sectional play continues Tuesday with two Northern State Conference rematches. Glenn faces Bremen at 5 p.m. The Falcons beat the Lions in an overtime shoot-out at their last meeting. At 7 p.m, LaVille and Culver reprise their regular season finale, which the Cavaliers won 2-1, en route to the NSC title.
The two Tuesday winners meet in a 7 p.m. Thursday semifinal.
The Dragons play Elkhart Christian at 5 p.m. in the other Thursday semifinal.
