Lady Dragons shut out ECA in NISC match-up

September 20, 2013

ARGOS — Argos beat Elkhart Christian Academy 5-0 in a Northern Indiana Soccer Conference match-up at home at Eugene Snyder Field Thursday.
Mariah Lineberry scored on a pass from Courtney Dunlap for what would be the game-winner just four minutes in. Dunlap later scored on a pass from Katie Williams, and she returned the favor on a Williams goal to make it 3-0 at the break.
“We had good offensive movement and good passing,” Argos coach Jon Alcorn said. “It’s still a young team, but we liked the way the kids are starting to read their teammates’ runs better. Defensively, we asked Abby Stauffer to step up and deny the pass to their target players in the center, and she played like it was all on her shoulders.”
The hosts dominated play, preventing a shot on goal by the Eagles while creating 26 shots on goal themselves.
Williams and Dunlap combined for an assist to Lineberry, who scored her second goal of the night to start the second half. Valerie Rospopo hit Kennedy Binkley for a score to complete the score sheet.
Argos moved to 7-5 on the year and 2-1 in the conference. The Dragons host defending Class A state champion Marian on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Knights, now playing in 2A, are currently ranked No. 14.
Elkhart dropped to 2-8-1 and 1-3 in the NISC. The Eagles travel to Trinity for a 2 p.m. Saturday conference game.
