Ancilla College used a big second quarter to beat Grand Rapids 83-53 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 12, District G semi-final Friday.
“Going in we thought we had a favorable match up that we might be able to take advantage of,” said Ancilla coach Tom Robbins. “Grand Rapids had played Mid-Michigan well in their previous meetings - better than we did - and when they got the upset Tuesday I felt we matched up better with them (Grand Rapids).”
Taking advantage of guard LaRae Roscoe and Alyssa Williams the Lady Chargers were able to force the issue.
“We really were able to get back to some of the things that we did well earlier in the year,” said Robbins. “We’d gotten into some situations lately where we’d gotten into some half court type of games and today we were able to get out and get into some full court situations that really is much better for us.”
Freshman guard LaRae Roscoe fought foul trouble in the first half, but was still able to put up a game-high 18 points, five assists and four steals. Alyssa Williams finished with 11 points.
They will face Lake Michigan College in the District G championship game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The District G winner advances to the NJCAA National Tournament at the end of March.
“(Lake Michigan) plays that match up zone so first of all we’ll have to deal with that,” said Robbins of Saturday’s region title game. “We’re confident though matching up with LMC again. I feel like maybe we match up a little better in terms of our guards. Muskegon’s guards are rock solid, you can’t rattle them at all and Lake Michigan is a little more emotional. We might be able to take advantage of that.”
The Lady Chargers (24-5) caused 24 Grand Rapids turnovers and scored 31 points off of those miscues. Ancilla had 15 second chance points and 30 points in the paint.
Ancilla split with Lake Michigan in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association regular season.
