John Tobias celebrates 50 years chopping locks

April 23, 2014

NAPPANEE -- John Tobias will celebrate 50 years in the hair business this May.
"I worked in a trailer factory in Wakarusa after I got out of the service," Tobias, 77, explained of his journey into cosmetology. "I didn't care for factory work; I painted cabinets for factory work and I wasn't making very much money. At the time, there just wasn't anything that I was interested in. I met this gal and she was a hairdresser. She talked me into going to beauty school."
He began working at a local salon with Dee Tobias now John's exwife after graduating from cosmetology school in 1964.
"I enjoy the people," he said "I just enjoy being around people and you get bored at home."
