Hoosier Gun Swingers take 3rd at SCTP State Championships

July 12, 2013

WALKERTON — Three John Glenn students received third place in the Scholastic Clay and Target Program (SCTP) State Championships at the Kosko Conservation Club in Warsaw on June 30.
Isaac Keldsen, Thomas Rudecki and Sydney Carson competed in the American Style Skeet and Sporting Clays on June 29 and June 30, respectively.
“We were a little disappointed because we all could have shot better,” commented Keldsen. “ We were less than 15 targets from first place, which we win almost every year.”
The trio are members of the Hoosier Gun Swingers, a group of school-aged kids from the area learning gun safety and the art of competitive shotgun clay target shooting as described on their website. The team competes in the SCTP and in USA Shooting, the governing body of Olympic Shooting Sports. The program is supported by Friends of Hoosier Gun Swingers, a non-profit group of dedicated volunteers.
The team will continue on the the 2013 SCTP National Team Championships in Sparta Illinois on July 15-20.
“Our varsity won last year, and we hope to follow their footsteps,” continued Keldsen. “There will be roughly 10,000 competitors competing in the three disciplines.”
The SCTP is a youth development program providing young people with a positive experience in sports. Two indispensable elements are incorporated into the design of activities — safety and fun. Youth from elementary grades through high school are eligible to participate in the safe, educational and enjoyable SCTP clay target sports of Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Olympic Trap, and Olympic Skeet.
SCTP is a part of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. a non-profit educational-athletic organization providing administrative support and direction for SCTP as chosen by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
