Dragons outlast LaVille in 2OT

December 11, 2013

ARGOS — When J.C. Oudes fouled out with 22.8 seconds on the clock in the second overtime, LaVille ran out of reserves. When Ben Carter knocked down both of his free throws to extend Argos’ lead to five with just 2.5 ticks remaining, the Lancers finally ran out of time.
The Dragons outlasted visiting LaVille 65-60 in a non-conference classic at Phil Weybright Gymnasium in Argos Tuesday night. It was the first win by the Dragons over the LaVille program in three seasons.
“Were down battling late in the game, and they’re making shots all over the place and doing a great job running their offense like they have all night, and I’ll give our kids a lot of credit hanging in there, not giving up,” said Argos head coach Doug Snyder. “They could’ve hung their heads. We went into our fullcourt press and it slowed them down a little bit, even though we didn’t get steal after steal.”
Foul trouble and free throws helped make the difference in the contest as the Lancers were whistled for 28 team fouls and four players — Isaac Eash, Justin Baker, Kyle Kopetski and Oudes — all fouled out, leaving the visitors with just four players on the floor in the home stretch of the second OT period. The Dragons were already in the double bonus with 4:31 left in the third quarter, and they converted 25-of-36 free throws — compared to 10-of-18 by LaVille — into points in the win.
“I felt pretty comfortable once we got into a situation where we were shooting free throws,” Snyder said. “We didn’t shoot as well as I would’ve liked, but I thought the kids did a pretty good job, well enough to win tonight.”
