Dragons and OD split

January 22, 2014

ARGOS — The Argos Dragons and the Oregon-Davis Bobcats split in the opening round matchup of the Bi-County Tournament. The Lady Bobcats took out the Lady Dragons on their home floor with a final score of 84-37 and advance to the second round. The Argos boys came away with a 35-32 win over the Bobcats in a nail biter.

It was a close game until the end and offense was hard to come by, but the Argos Dragons made the plays they needed to in order to hold off the Bobcats with a 35-32 win. The Bobcats took an early 7-3 lead midway through the first, but Argos was able to finish the quarter strong and hold a 9-8 lead over O-D after one. Both teams played each other evenly in the second until late in the quarter when Argos was able to get a five-point lead off a 3 by senior Dominic Cataldo. The Bobcats wouldn’t go down without a fight as they scored five unanswered to close out the quarter, including a putback off of his own miss by junior Joel Worthington at the buzzer to tie the game at 24-24.
In the third quarter, Argos turned up the defense, forcing eight Bobcat turnovers in the quarter.
“The half-court trap did give us a little spirit there to begin the second half. I just felt our kids were dead, not just physically, but mentally, and it did help out,” said Argos coach Doug Snyder.
Neither team was able to do much offensively in the quarter as the score was tied at 28-28 with about three minutes remaining. Argos would add five more before the quarter ended, taking a 33-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Oregon-Davis Lady Bobcats were able to move past the Argos Lady Dragons behind a senior Ashley Campbell’s 35 on a record-setting night for her in the opening night of the Bi-County Tournament.
Needing only six points to move past Aubrey Minx’s school record of 1630, she was able to do that about midway through the first quarter and took over from there. After breaking the record, she hit her next 10 baskets in a row, including three from beyond the arc.
“Ashley Campbell, after breaking the record, I think just took the weight off her shoulders,” said O-D coach Terry Minix. “After that she shot extremely well and got us going.”
