County requires permit for demolition
MARSHALL COUNTY- Along with building, now tearing down will require a permit in Marshall County.
Unincorporated areas of Marshall County will join several towns in requiring a demolition permit to tear down structures after the Marshall County Commissioners approved an ordinance creating the new permit. There is no charge for the permit.
Currently structures in the county can be demolished with no restriction on who performs the work or really how it is done. There are several public health and safety reasons that some county officials are behind the idea.
Shut off of utilities, capping of abandoned wells and proper erosion control are all requirements of any demolition and are not enforced if the demolition is not reported.
The County Plan office will use the application process for the permit as an opportunity to educate the public on the health and safety priorities of tearing down a structure.
