Campbell leads CMA in season-opening win

November 26, 2013

CULVER — In the preseason, CMA basketball coach Mark Galloway summed up this year’s team philosophy with one word: defense.
And by that measure, Monday’s season-opener against visiting Indianapolis Home School was a success. But the Eagles were also pretty good on the offensive end, too.
Culver Military held the Wildcats to a woeful 9-of-40 from the field while turning the visitors over 25 times off intermittent fullcourt and halfcourt trap pressure. On the other end of the floor, the Eagles scored at better than 50 percent from the field, and the result was a 63-28 season-opening rout of Indy Home School at home at Fleet Gymnasium.
“We’ve definitely been harping on team defense,” said Galloway. “I thought in the third quarter, we only held them to five points, so — they didn’t shoot it well but I thought we were in the right spots. You’ve got to be in help-side, you’ve got to be talking, you’ve got to take the post away, which I thought we did a good job of fronting the post.
“I think all our guys, one through five, are trying to do the right things defensively.”
