The Starke County Commission addressed a number of topics at their Aug. 4 meeting, most involving the Starke County Highway Department or EMS services.
The first order of business was opening new bids for the replacement of two bridges, Bridge No. 86, on C.R. 900 S., west of C.R. 100 W., and Bridge No. 31, on C.R. 800 E., south of C.R. 25 N. The bids for the projects that originally were opened July 7 were higher than expected, and the projects were rebid.
The final bids were from: JCI Bridge Group, La Porte, for $323,121 on Bridge 31, and $318,110 on Bridge 86; and La Porte Construction Company for $301,099 on Bridge 31, and $303,018 on Bridge 86. After review by Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler, the Commission approved the bids from La Porte Construction. Construction is scheduled to start immediately, with an estimated November completion date.
One of the issues addressed with Starke County EMS involved dedicated services provided at special events, and how to recoup expenses for those expenses. A formal proposal will be developed to include the types of occasions requiring the services and related funding possibilities.
