Bennitt tosses 1-hitter as Bremen blanks LaVille, 11-0
LAKEVILLE — On a cold night in Lakeville, the Lancers’ bats matched the weather as they were only able to come away with one hit off Bremen’s Jacob Bennitt, losing 11-0.
Bennitt finished with nine strikeouts without walking a single batter in the shutout. The Bremen Lions came to play at the plate as well, starting the game with five runs in the first inning and cycling through the entire order.
“We dug a hole we just couldn’t work out of,” said Lancer coach Dave Pittman. “We struggled to hit the ball this year in several games. The defense was good after the first inning. We just couldn’t hit the ball. We started two freshman and five sophomores tonight. This is a growing year for us.”
The Lancer defense did settle down a bit, turning an inning-ending double play in the second. Bremen scored a couple of runs in the third on a couple of errors by LaVille, but the Lions couldn’t improve on their 7-0 lead in the fourth or fifth, going down in order in both innings.
In the sixth inning, the Lions were able to get their first three batters on, with one of them scoring on a sac fly. Then Drew Coffel sent one sailing over the left field fence, racking up three of his four RBIs on the night and bringing the lead to 11-0. From there on, Bennitt was able to fan two of the last three batters to end the game in six.
Stellar pitching along with timely hitting were the keys to the game. The Lions made the most of the opportunities that were given to them, scoring in every inning that LaVille committed an error.
“It started from the very first pitch on offense. We got the bats going early and Jacob came out and gave up only one hit for the game,” said Lions’ coach Bo Hundt. “He was around the strike zone all day and picked up his third win. We are 15-5 now, which is a great start. We just want to continue to improve every day.”
