Argos falls in five to South Central at Culver championship

CULVER — The Argos Dragons came up short in their bid to take home the Sectional 51 Baseball Championship, losing 14-2 to the South Central Satellites in the finals.
South Central put the bat to the ball early and often and it felt like there was just nothing in their power the Dragons could do to stop them.
“We didn’t play a bad game and that’s what I told the kids. We didn’t play bad, we just ran into a team that was just beating the daylights out of the ball,” said Argos skipper Lowell Hatfield. “They did a nice job. They put it where we weren’t and that’s the game of baseball. They hadn’t hit this well all tournament and they came out and hit the ball really well.”
In the top of the first inning, it looked like Argos was going to get on the board early when senior Dominic Cataldo tattooed a pitch all the way to the left field fence and turned into a double with two outs already in the inning. Tylor Peters then reached base safely on the Satellites’ lone error of the game, moving Cataldo to third. Then with runners on the corner the Dragons struck out ending their chance to get an early lead in this game. South Central then scored three in the bottom of the first on two doubles.
In the top of the second, Argos was able to capitalize on some pitching mistakes by South Central. Three of the first four batters were hit by a pitch, loading the bases with only one out in the inning. Then senior Alex Dewulf hit a pitch hard to the pitcher, who wasn’t able to handle it, and reached base safely bringing in a run.  Noah Spicer then hit another one to the pitcher and reached safely on the fielder’s choice, bringing in Argos’ last run of the night. Then with two outs and runners on the corners, Argos would strike out again, ending their chances at knotting the game up.
From then on it was all South Central as they were able to score four in the second and five in the third and added two more for insurance in the fourth. They hit five doubles and a triple in this game on 15 hits.
Argos had a few more good at bats in the game with hard-hit balls, but they always ended up in the gloves of the South Central defense that just seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
“We did hit the ball, but I think they only made one error,” said Hatfield. “I told our guys I was not disappointed in them. They played a decent game. We didn’t boot the ball around much. I was happy with our performance.”
For Argos, the future looks brighter as they return all but four players to a team that had a chance at a sectional title.  “It’s been a long time since Argos has played with a chance to win the sectional title, a long, long time.  I talked about that with the kids before the game and after the game,” said Hatfield.  “The community support out here was great. The community recognizes that. That is what I wanted the guys to know. It might be their last game, but Argos baseball is headed in the right direction.”
