Argos dominates Cavs in Culver Sectional opener

October 9, 2013

CULVER — The Argos Dragons opened sectionals in impressive fashion, beating the Culver Cavaliers 12-2 in the opening game of the Class A Culver Sectional.
“We started off a little choppy, which I expected. I think most teams, in the first five or 10 minutes, get a little nervous,” said Argos coach Todd VanDerWeele. “The ball was bouncing off their feet a little harder than usual. We settled down and got going early. I was happy with that. We had a rough game Saturday that didn’t go our way. It was nice to rebound this way.”
After the first 10 minutes, the Dragons did get going, scoring early and often.
Junior forward Damon Binkley scored a hat trick in about a four-minute span, tallying goals in the 13th, 14th and 17th minutes. Senior Dominic Cataldo scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Binkley would add his fourth in the 21st, and just like that, the Dragons struck with five goals in less than 10 minutes of action.
The Cavaliers were never able to recover from the onslaught. The Dragons added three more in the final five minutes of the first half, giving them an 8-0 lead at the break. Dragon junior Brandon Thomas was also able to record a hat trick, scoring in the 37th, 77th and 78th minutes.
The Cavaliers were able to tack on a couple in the second half, one on a penalty kick by Nick Pritz at the 64th minute, and the other off a nice pass from Derek Keller to Henrik Bill, who was able to get it past the keeper at the 65th minute. It would be their only stretch of offense as they were only able to get 3 shots on goal for the game.
Coach VanDerWeele talked about what his team needs to do in order to stay successful against upcoming opponent Lakeland Christian.
“We already played Lakeland Christian and beat them 9-0, so we need to come out and concentrate like tonight and just take care of business. One game at a time is how we take this time of the season, and that’s how we are going to have to continue.”
Even with the loss, Cavalier coach Jeff Becker still felt the season was successful.
“Our season ended 7-8-1, which is one of the better seasons we have had in a while,” he said. “We had seven seniors, and they did a good job this year. The seniors set a good example for the younger kids this year. We had quite a few underclassmen who where a big part of our program this year. With that, hopefully we have something to build on for next year. I think the program is headed in the right direction.”
With the win Argos moves on to the second round and will play Lakeland Christian Wednesday night following the Bremen vs. Winamac game which begins at 5 p.m. The winners of those two games will play for the sectional championship Saturday at 5 p.m.
