All aboard the easter train
NORTH JUDSON — The Easter Train will be riding the rails once again. This year's train will depart Saturday, April 19 from the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. The easter train journey will be the first excursion for the 2014 season.
Passengers will ride in vintage cabooses, a passenger coach, or open-air sightseeing cars. The train excursion is round-trip from the depot and travels more than five miles, crossing the Kankakee River at English Lake, before returning to North Judson. The train then continues on to a park along the railroad tracks where passengers will disembark for an Easter egg hunt and a visit with the Easter Bunny. Each child and youth will receive a bag of Easter items, toys, and candy from the Easter Bunny. Afterward, everyone will board the train for the trip back to the depot.
There will be three Easter train trips. The first will leave the station at 10 a.m., the second at 12:30 p.m., and the final train departs at 2:30 p.m. (central time).
The total length of each trip, including the Easter egg hunt, will be approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Ticket prices begin at $7 and purchasing tickets on-line is recommended at the www.hoosiervalley.org.
Before or after the train excursion, be sure to visit the museum and grounds where the admission is always free. The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum has one of the largest museum collections of working railroad signals and visitors are welcome to stand next to and touch the C&O 2789 steam locomotive which is the cornerstone of the museum. Stroll around the grounds to see all types of rolling stock and engines of a by-gone era.
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum has an exciting schedule of events planned for this season. Saturday train rides continue May through the end of October with round-trip runs to English Lake or LaCrosse. Some of the special events scheduled are 25 percent off Specials; Mother’s Day; Armed Forces Day Motorcycle Run and Train Ride co-sponsored with Kersting’s Cycle Shop; North Judson’s Mint Festival; a WWII War Encampment; Scouts Rails & Trails; Fall Harvest Trains; Pumpkin & Halloween Specials; Santa Trains; as well as an Open House Extravaganza.
