3rd time’s the charm for Bremen vs LaVille

February 12, 2014

ALBION — There’s an old adage among coaches that one of the toughest things to do is to beat a team three times in a single year. Case in point: Bremen versus LaVille.
After two convincing wins by the Lancers in regular-season play, the third time proved the charm for the Lady Lions as they earned a Sectional 35 reprisal over their NSC rivals Tuesday night, 55-36. Bremen thus advances to Westview — which drew the bye at the tournament — in the early semifinal Friday in Albion.
“Obviously you talk about it because you don’t like to get beat. We got beat by 16 both games. The girls came out ready to play. They did not want to get beat again,” said Bremen head coach Tonja Lucchese.
“It was hard to beat them once, and we beat them twice,” said LaVille head coach Kevin McCullough. “We were not as ready to play tonight as we were those other two games. They were aggressive. We started the game aggressive… but we had plenty of good looks and just couldn’t get a basket.
“I’m giving them all the props. They played a little better than we did tonight.”
LaVille jumped out front early with a 10-6 first frame, but the Lady Lions held the Lancers to just four points during a 15-4 second quarter to get in the driver’s seat for good.
Hannah Herbster, who averaged 25 points during the two teams’ first two meetings, scored six as her team grabbed the early lead in the first period, but put up just five points thereafter.
