Course to help seniors maintain balance
NORTH JUDSON — Vernadine Parker, a Master Trainer with Northwest Indiana Community Action, will be conducting an eight-week course designed to help seniors maintain their balance. The sessions will be held at the Community Services of Starke County building in North Judson. Parker was at North Judson recently to familiarize seniors with the advantages of taking the course. She enrolled eight residents for the free course, and has room for six more. The class starts at 12:30 p.m. each Tuesday, with the first one having been held Feb. 4. Those enrolled in the class will not need to be present for each session, but those who attend five of the eight sessions will be awarded a certificate of completion. Anyone who has concerns about falling, or has fallen in the past is encouraged to join the class. Parker emphasizes that the program will view falls as controllable, and will show how to make changes in the home or lifestyle to reduce the risk of falling. The program, which was developed by Boston University is nationally acclaimed, and evidence-based. The National Council on Aging promotes it to reduce the fear of falling. More than 97 percent of the participants report that they are more comfortable talking about the fear of falling, feel comfortable increasing activity, and plan to continue exercising. For more information on the classes, that will last approximately two hours per session, call 1-800-826-7871 extension 2245. Any senior over the age of 60 can enroll in the class. The Community Services of Starke County building in North Judson is located at 105 Talmer Ave.
Now here’s a tip
• “Keep cats indoors during very cold weather. They are particularly vulnerable to freezing. If you can leave the curtains drawn on a window where Kitty can look outside and sunbathe, she probably will be happy.” -- M.R. in Washington • If you have lots of outdoor or feral cats in your area, here is some good advice, given to me by my grandmother: Start your car with a bang -- on the hood, that is. When the overnight temperature dips, cats know to find someplace that is wind-shielded and off the ground, and sometimes that means they will climb up into your engine area to hunker down. If your car starts while they’re there, they can be hurt or even killed. Give the hood a good knock to let a cat know to get out quick. -- JoAnn • Pet paws need extra care in the cold months, especially dogs that must be walked in icy and snowy conditions. Here’s a great tip from Y.L. in New York: “I keep a small towel with me on my daily dog walks, but I also wash off my dog’s paws with a warm washcloth when we return. I also rub petroleum jelly into her pads once a day. They really take a beating, having to go out three times a day in salty, muddy, cold conditions. She won’t wear doggie booties, so this works best for us.” • If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475 or e-mail JoAnn at heresatip@yahoo.com.

MARSHALL — WE NEED YOUR HELP! The Marshall County Museum is looking for historic pictures of, or memorabilia from, local gas stations, drive-in’s, watering holes or any automotive-related business or industry in Marshall County from ANY era. The museum is working on an open house and exhibit in March that tells the story of how the rich history and vast influence of transportation helped shape the development of Marshall County. A traveling exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis entitled, “Auto Indiana,” will also be featured as part of the exhibit which illuminates ties between the automobile and the expansion of many other economic opportunities for the “Crossroads of America.” If you are willing to share some of your personal photographs or memorabilia for this special exhibit, please call the museum at 574-936-2306, or email questions or pictures to mlangdon@ mchistoricalsociety.org.
WESTVILLE — Purdue University North Central will have a FAFSA Help Weekend to help students and parents complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) paperwork on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 in Technology Building Room 265. The FAFSA is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, loans and scholarships at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide and must be filed by March 10 to be eligible for state aid. Any college-bound student and their parents may stop in, email or call to seek assistance or ask questions. On Saturday, Feb. 22, assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST. On Sunday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., PNC will participate in the statewide College Goal Sunday activities. PNC will be one of 40 College Goal Sunday sites in Indiana offering students and their parents the help they need in understanding, completing and filing the FAFSA. Throughout FAFSA Help Weekend, there will be e-mail and instant messenger and an open phone line to take incoming questions. The email address is pnctoday@pnc.edu and telephone, 877-792-2013.
