It's been around 70 years since Culver's Jim McAllister flew 72 missions in a Spitfire fighter plane over Germany with the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, and 30 years since he died in 1984, but later this month his wife, Harriet Provost, will finally see what she long felt was an injustice righted.

Its unique makeup gives the Culver's community plenty to celebrate, but at times offers a few challenges, with quality and abundent child care among them. That's particularly true given not only the seasonal nature of the community, but certainly as regards the children of the faculty and staff of Culver Academies, the largest employer in Marshall County.

Taste of Culver fest June 14

The 2014 Taste of Culver will be held Saturday, June 14 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Downtown Jefferson Street will be closed to traffic as the food booths line the street, spilling over into Heritage Park, where tree shaded ta­bles and chairs will allow participants to enjoy a variety of foods and the melodious sounds of Ken Arnsbarger’s steel drums.

Changes in administration at all levels of Culver Comm. Schools

A host of changes in faculty and administration at Culver Community Schools include a new face behind the principal's desk at Culver Elementary, and a sharing of the assistant principal and athletic director positions at Culver Comm. Middle and High Schools, among other changes.

In the elementary principal position this fall will be Erin Proskey, current elementary assistant principal.

Berndt is new high, middle school principal

Culver Community High and Middle Schools will both have a new principal this fall, though for the first time in some years, it will be the same person...and he's a familiar face.
Brett Berndt was voted by the Culver Community School board at its May 19 meeting to transition from his position as dean of students for the high school only, to fulfill both the midddle and high school positions.

Culver Community Schools superintendent Dr. Vicki McGuire noted an assistant principal's position, which is combineed with the athletic director title, is currently being advertised.

Visitor Center to market Culver, locally and beyond

The much-discussed Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee Visitor Center is about to become a reality, and will open its doors to the community officially at a grand opening Saturday, June 14, starting at 1 p.m. during the annual Taste of Culver festival at Jefferson and Main Streets in downtown Culver.

The center -- which formally incorporated with a five-member board earlier this month -- has evolved over months of planning and effort. Board members include president Kathy Clark; vice president Mary Kunkle; Chad Van Herk, secretary-treasurer; Rich West; Sue Beggs; Dana Keller; and Jeff Kenney.

Any expectations of heated debate over proposed changes to the town of Culver's wind ordinance at last week's Culver plan commission meeting were unfounded, though that's not to say there was no hint of frustration on the part of some on the commission.

Culver Comm. High School top five students

The top five students at Culver Community High School, class of 2014 are (in alphabetical order): Dylan Bennett, Caleb Dehning, Megan Lyczak, Kennedi Thomas and Tim Wireman.

Graduation exercises were Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Albert Hanselman, Principal, presented the class and Dr. Vickie McGuire, superintendent, awarded the diplomas.
