Sara Slabaugh is Bremen’s newest DYW, BHS senior will now go to state contest

BREMEN — Seven of Bremen’s most talented young women competed Saturday night, but in the end there can be only one Distinguished Young Woman of Bremen.
The judges selected Sara Slabaugh as Bremen’s DYW of 2014.
Slabaugh bested six other Bremen High School seniors to earn the victory. She’ll now compete at the state event in Kokomo in February for a chance to continue to the national program.
Slabaugh earned a $1,000 scholarship by winning the local contest.

Practices continue for contestants in DYW

BREMEN — The seven contestants taking part in this year’s Distinguished Young Women of Bremen event spent the last week preparing for Saturday’s competition and organizers say tickets remain available.
“As their last few days approach, the girls are staging talents, preparing for interviews, and perfecting routines,” said Lisa Lemler, event organizer. “The contestants have been practicing hard every Sunday since the end of June at the Bremen United Methodist Church Student Center, so the audience is in for a wonderful show.”

The Bremen High School class of 1978 celebrated its 35-year class reunion on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Bremen VFW. Attendance was well over 100 with 56 classmates and nine teachers included in the gathering: (in front from left) Teresa Hochstetler Kobold, Anna Wagley Gonzalez, Nancy Martin Cox, Susan Wittlinger Madlem, Jim Haywood, Sue Carey Ernsberger, Nancy Carter Linville and Pat Reed Wilson.

Police: 'Roughhousing' led to violent crime

BREMEN — A Bremen man has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly for allegedly stabbing a friend while “roughhousing” in early July, according to police.
Bremen police Chief Matt Hassel said Jason Houk, 34, of the 900 block of Center Street, was booked into the Marshall County Jail shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday.
Bremen police were called to an area near the intersection of Center and Third streets at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, on a report of a stabbing, the police chief said in a news release.

Kelty replaces Merritt on Bremen school board

BREMEN — Sheila Kelty is the newest member of the Bremen school board.
Kelty was sworn in at the board’s July 23 meeting, corporation officials said recently. Her term runs through December 2014.
Kelty holds a doctorate of Health Administration from Central Michigan University and an MBA from Ball State University.
Kelty currently works as a health care financial advisor for Purdue University. She previously worked as vice president of Community Hospital of Bremen from 2005 to 2009.

BREMEN — Distinguished Young Women of Bremen, formerly Bremen’s Junior Miss, will be holding its annual program on Saturday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium.
There will be seven young women competing for this year’s title. 
Television personality Dean Huppert with WSJV will emcee the program this year.
Seven contestants will compete for the title of the 2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Bremen and over $2,000 in cash scholarships.
The DYW Program is full of scholarship opportunities for high school senior girls.

BREMEN — Distinguished Young Women of Bremen, formerly Bremen’s Junior Miss, will be holding its annual program on Saturday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m. at the Bowen Auditorium.
There will be seven young women competing for this year’s title.

Taking part this year are Shianne Mammon, Claire Schmidt, Dania Alvarado, Bay Cope, Alexis Pate, Sara Slabaugh and Madison Anne Stover.

School starts Wednesday so drivers need to be on the lookout

BREMEN — School opens Wednesday, Aug. 14, and the Bremen Police Department in cooperation with the Bremen Public Schools would like to remind motorists to be especially careful and watch for children on their way to and from school.

Police Chief Matthew Hassel said there will be an increase in child pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., 7:55 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. on Thursday, as well as 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Borkholder wins scholarship

August 2, 2013

Angelina Borkholder, right, is awarded the Roaring Lambs Scholarship by Sandy Krost, member of the Pathfinder’s Class of Bremen United Methodist Church. Borkholder will be a junior at Taylor University in the fall. The $500 scholarship was established in memory of Michael L. Devine in 1994 when he would have been a member of that high school graduating class.
