Personnel, vehicle changes at BPD

February 18, 2011

The Bremen Police Department is used to trading in its used vehicles for new ones, which it will soon do with two within its six-vehicle fleet. However, it isn't used to the simultaneous staff turnover it currently faces.

Dispatcher Laverne Replogle retired Feb. 17 after 17 years between the BPD and the Marshall County Sheriff's Department 911 center. Barb Capron, the department's dispatch supervisor, will retire Feb. 28 after 28 years of service.

Capron's position will be filled in-house by Melinda Daily, a radio operator of 23 years who will move from Class B to Class A.

State report favorable for Bremen schools

February 9, 2011

BREMEN — With the release of the Indiana Department of Education Annual Performance Report, Bremen Public Schools saw continued improvement in some key areas.

Perhaps most notably, Bremen High School's graduation rate jumped to 92.3 percent, up from 85.6 percent two years ago and 7.2 percent above the state average.

"That's been a big goal as part of the improvement plan at the high school," Bremen Public Schools Superintendent Russ Mikel said. "Unlike some districts, we're at that rate without granting any waivers, so that's a true number for us and we're pretty proud about that."

Trouble averted with local gas leak

January 7, 2011

BREMEN — In a not-so-uncommon occurrence, a local digging project turned hazardous last week.
Last Monday, B & W Specialized Drilling of Indianapolis was performing a directional bore for Bremen Castings, for fiber optic line between buildings. A gas line was not located in the drilling location, and the crew hit one, causing a significant leak.

New location, award for local jeweler

January 2, 2011

BREMEN — For Plaza Jewelers owner/operator Angie Thornton, a change of venue was needed.
The decision to move from the store's previous location in the plaza by H & R Block to the new one at 1311 W. Plymouth St. was two-fold.
“We'd prefer to own rather than rent,” Thornton said. “Plus it fixed up an eyesore in town and we should have better visibility.”
The redone storefront is a far cry from its previous state as a dilapidated former laundromat.

Strong named commander of Bremen Post

January 2, 2011

BREMEN — Indiana State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell, Ph.D., recently announced the promotion of First Sergeant James Strong to the rank of lieutenant to serve as the commander of the Indiana State Police Post in Bremen.
The Bremen Post covers Marshall, St. Joseph, Kosciusko and Elkhart Counties. Strong earned this promotion through written testing and a competitive interview process.

Local child a survivor, thriver

January 2, 2011

BREMEN — It hasn’t been an easy road for Brenna Blosser, but the 6-year-old’s exuberance for life serves as a lesson for those who don’t realize how lucky they are.
On Sept. 15, 2005, the same day as her sister Madison’s birthday, Brenna’s life was forever changed. Just 13 months old at the time, Brenna’s parents — Brad and Mindi Blosser — thought she was fighting a cold. Then, in the middle of the night, Brenna’s left leg turned cold and blue, and her breathing became seriously labored.

Bremen students giving back

December 21, 2010

BREMEN — It is never too early to recognize the importance of helping others, as students at Bremen Elementary-Middle School are learning first-hand.
The brainchild of first-year guidance counselor Jennifer True, the recently formed Bremen Leadership Team (BLT) is taking time to give back to the community.
“It was something I really wanted to do, so I started it and asked all of the eighth-graders if they would want to be a part,” True said. “I got an overwhelming response from them. I have a solid 35 or 40 kids at any given meeting, and there’s more joining all the time.”

Boys & Girls Club keeping kids busy

December 21, 2010

BREMEN — With most households having two working parents — if they’re lucky enough to both have jobs — many face the question of what to do with their young children after school. The Boys & Girls Club of Bremen provides an answer.
Started just last year, the Boys & Girls Club gives kids a place to go between the end of school and when their parents get off work. Located within Bremen Elementary-Middle School, it is a refuge of learning and fun.

Bremen Bucks keep local money local

December 21, 2010

BREMEN — To ensure a solid future for area businesses and downtown, few things are more critical than residents spending their money here.
“It is extremely important. It’s how our communities thrive,” Bremen Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Phyllis Van De Keere said. “If all of our residents shopped out of town, then our businesses would soon have to close. If they close, our town would start to die. It is important for people to shop in town whenever possible.”
