Foul weather can’t spoil lighting

November 30, 2010

BREMEN — Bitter cold temperatures and freezing rain didn’t stop people from coming out and kicking off the holiday season with the annual lighting of the main street in Bremen.
Holiday classics were performed by the Horizon band. Girls and Boys Scouts helped sing and “Here comes Santa Claus”  was performed to welcome for the arrival of Old Saint Nick.
Jennifer Gonzales was this year’s coloring contest winner and had the honor of flipping the switch to light up the downtown area. The night finished up with a quick visit with Santa.

Shop with a Cop makes Christmas brighter

November 30, 2010

The annual Shop with a Cop program might be organized by the Plymouth Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #195, but its benefits reach Bremen as well.
“There has been a misconception that this event was only for Plymouth children, so it’s been a little difficult in recent years getting Bremen to donate,” said Pattie Udstuen, volunteer and owner of Encore Consignment Shop. “We just want everyone to know it also helps Bremen children.”
Plymouth FOP #195 President Hurshel Hunter echoed that sentiment.

Holy Walk is a Bremen tradition

November 24, 2010

BREMEN — While live nativity scenes are quite common, the annual Holy Walk offers a unique dramatized vision of the birth of Jesus Christ.
This year’s 30th anniversary Holy Walk will be Dec. 3-4 on the farm of Jim and Loretta Huff, where it has taken place all but the first year.
“We always look forward to it,” Loretta Huff said of the event, which is free to the public. “It’s kind of our mission project and we just want to share our property. We don’t take the credit for it because many people from many different churches are involved.”

Koontz Hardware celebrating 60 years

November 24, 2010

BREMEN — As the name on the building indicates, Koontz Hardware always has been a family operation. In two weeks, the family will celebrate 60 years in business downtown.
“It has been our livelihood for all our lives, for me ever since I graduated high school in 1960,” co-owner Kent Koontz said. “Our mom and dad started it and I’ve worked here, my daughters work here, my cousin Bob works here and I had another cousin and my brother work here. We’ve enjoyed it, especially all the people.”

Bremen honored in Indy

November 24, 2010

STATEHOUSE — Bremen Elementary-Middle School was one of nine high-growth schools to be honored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett during a ceremony at the Statehouse Nov. 8.
“This is a great honor and another example of the great things that are taking place at Bremen Elementary-Middle School every day,” said Principal Larry Yelaska.
The schools were selected because a large percentage of their students in grades 3-8 achieved high academic growth in both mathematics and language arts during the 2009-10 school year.

BREMEN — While most were focused on state races and Republicans’ national rout of Democrats on Election Day, Lake of the Woods residents had some local turnover of their own.
Two new members will join the Lake of the Woods sewer board after Polly Manges and William Harner Jr. were selected over incumbents Joe Skelton and Joe Toth.
“Obviously I’m pleased with the results and will strive to serve the people and bring unity back to our community,” Manges said.

ISTEP improvement brings honor

November 16, 2010

BREMEN — Hard work by Bremen Public Schools personnel and students is paying off.
At a press conference Monday in Indianapolis, Bremen was recognized as one of nine school corporations in the state whose students have recognized substantial academic growth. The award is based on Bremen’s Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP) scores from last spring’s testing.

New hoops court now open

November 5, 2010

BREMEN — The outdoor basketball season is winding down, but local hoopsters have a brand new court for when the weather turns nice.
After two months of construction, the Bremen Park Department has opened the sparkling court at Sunnyside Park.
"We've been wanting to get a nice basketball facility down here," Park Department Superintendent Larry Kipfer said. "We had one up on the reservoir, but that thing kind of got bad and was never redone."
Built in 1980, the previous courts sat atop a million-gallon water storage tank. It included a significant incline from one end to the other.
