BPS budget in good shape

BREMEN — Bremen Public Schools’ budget may be tight, but Superintendent Russ Mikel noted at the last school board meeting, “We (school corporation) are in pretty good shape at this time.”

BREMEN — The Bremen High football team was in good hands with Ben Hueni Friday night.
Hueni had seven catches for 109 yards and one score, helping No. 5 Bremen cruise to a 28-6 win over Lewis Cass in the Class 2A Sectional 26 championship game at a chilly Don Bunge Field.
Three touchdowns on their first three possessions helped the Lions (12-0) seize command and earn their second consecutive sectional championship. Next up for Bremen is the regional final at No. 6 Wheeler (12-0), a 48-6 winner over North Newton Nov. 11.

Halloween hoopla in Bremen

Down-home laughter guaranteed at BHS production of ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’

BREMEN — Swimming pools. Movie stars.
Those are just two of the many fascinating aspects of life in Beverly Hills, as seen through the eyes of the transplanted down-home Clampetts in the popular ‘60s television show, “The Beverly Hillbillies.” Now, Bremen High School brings the characters alive on the Bowen Auditorium stage with the theatrical production of the same name.
“This show is hilarious,” said director Laura Watts.
“It is based off of the television program we all know and love, although I have strongly encouraged the students to make each character their own.”

Family, friends band together to give Bremen man last wish

BREMEN — Brothers Ed and Rich Morgan lost their brother five years ago to cancer. Now, Rich is battling cancer in his liver and the lining of his stomach, and was recently told he may only live for three more months.
Ed, owner of Hooples Tavern in Bremen, is doing everything he can to help his remaining older brother.
“I asked him if there was anything I could do,” said Ed. “He said, ‘I’ve never been to Florida, and I’ve never been to Disney, and I want to go.’”
Ed immediately stepped up and organized a benefit for his brother.

Encore Consignment opens store in Plymouth

Third location in six years for the widely successful store
PLYMOUTH — Encore Consignment opened in Plymouth just a few weeks ago, finding a home downtown next to Rock On 109 Boutique. Owner Pattie Udstuen, who also oversees two other Encore locations in Nappanee and Bremen, said that she had been wanting to open a store in Plymouth for quite some time.
“We’ve had customers asking us to come to Plymouth for the last few years,” said Udstuen, adding that some even sent her tips on possible locations.
“One business owner even offered (us) space in her building,” said Udstuen.

Butch Nine memorial Thursday

The Nappanee Police Department will hold the 23rd annual memorial of the death of Officer Brant Nine. Brant (Butch) was killed in the line of duty Nov. 3, 1988 while responding to a call at a local merchant regarding an individual attempting to pass a forged check. Officer Nine was 41 years old and had served on the Nappanee Department for six years prior to being shot in the line of duty. The Memorial Service will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Bremen Cemetery at the grave site for Officer Nine.

Drug Take Back Oct. 29

The Bremen Police Department and Reserve Officers will be participating in the National Take Back Initiative sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to until 2 p.m. residents can drop of their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs to the Bremen Police Officers at Woodie’s Supermarket parking lot, 116 N. Bowen Ave. in Bremen.

Crowel celebrates 7 years making things ‘cozy’ in Bremen

Kathy Crowel says that when she opened her shop in October of 2004 she wanted to bring things “cozy” to her customers.
The Cozy Home Shop, 111 W. Plymouth St., in Bremen does just that offering new and quality used items for sale. Crowel said that most of what she offers was acquired from auctions and estate sales and she tries to pass on affordable prices.
“I try to keep things reasonable,” she explained. “If I can I will pass on the savings if I paid less for it.”
