The ‘force’ strong in Bremen at library

BREMEN — The children’s department of the Bremen Public Library is definitely a “force” to be reckoned with. Especially when it comes to entertaining its young patrons like it did Nov. 7 and 8 during the Star Wars-themed “Guys Night Out.”

Santa Claus is coming to town

BREMEN — Santa Claus will come to Bremen Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Children and their families are invited to meet him at the corner of Plymouth and Center streets next to bFit. The event, sponsored by the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and 1st Source Bank will feature live music from the Horizon Ministries team (which will also be giving out cookies and hot chocolate), local Scout troops parading, Dean Huppert as Master of Ceremonies, caroling and more.

Homespun Holidays starts off local shopping season

BREMEN — Koontz Hardware was just one of 16 Bremen and area businesses that took part in the annual Homespun Holidays seasonal kick-off Nov. 10, 11 and 12.
Businesses had their windows and showrooms accented with Christmas products and decor and most offered special savings and refreshments to the customers. Gingerbread men stood proudly in windows and outside those buildings that participated to signal for shoppers to check out the seasonal attractions.

Area’s generous helping feed the needs

BREMEN — Area entities are spreading their generosity and assisting the local communities by putting food on tables this Thanksgiving Day. Some are offering meals for the holiday while another does it all year round, but those in need of sustenance — be it physical, spiritual or social — that live in or near Bremen, Nappanee and Wakarusa should have no problem finding a good meal … and even better camaraderie.

Glant awarded leader of the year

BREMEN — Sue Glant of Bremen was recently awarded Weight Watcher Leader of the Year for 2011. One award is given per territory (hers includes areas within lower Michigan to Kokomo).
Glant was born and raised in Bremen. Her reasons for becoming a Weight Watchers leader were simple, “I had always been overweight and I joined Weight Watchers in January 1979 because I always started a diet in January,” she said. “Weight Watchers gave me a plan and a meeting so I was accounted for each week.”
No longer an issue, the fine-at-57 lady has led others to lose weight.

Mammoth cheese wheel a ‘big’ attraction

BREMEN — Where would one find a 1,100 pound block of cheese?
At Rentown of course! Halfway between Bremen and Nappanee, at 1533 3rd Road, sits the Rentown Country Store, referred to as “The Cheese King of the Midwest.”

BPS budget in good shape

BREMEN — Bremen Public Schools’ budget may be tight, but Superintendent Russ Mikel noted at the last school board meeting, “We (school corporation) are in pretty good shape at this time.”

Lions are 2011 Sectional champs!

BREMEN — The Bremen High football team was in good hands with Ben Hueni Friday night.
Hueni had seven catches for 109 yards and one score, helping No. 5 Bremen cruise to a 28-6 win over Lewis Cass in the Class 2A Sectional 26 championship game at a chilly Don Bunge Field.
Three touchdowns on their first three possessions helped the Lions (12-0) seize command and earn their second consecutive sectional championship. Next up for Bremen is the regional final at No. 6 Wheeler (12-0), a 48-6 winner over North Newton Nov. 11.

Halloween hoopla in Bremen

Billing and building addressed by council

BREMEN — Bremen’s Town Council addressed issues regarding billing its utility customers and a building at the local ball park.
